What Is Being Made
The Boxy Brocade Pullover is a unisex pullover sweater designed with a relaxed, boxy silhouette. This downloadable knitting pattern features a contemporary construction method and is available in eight sizes ranging from 36" to 64" final chest circumference, with 2-4" of positive ease built into the design. The sweater is intended for intermediate-level knitters seeking a modern, structured garment with decorative stitch patterning.
Construction Techniques
The Boxy Brocade Pullover employs a bottom-up construction method, which allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed. The pattern uses several key techniques:
- Circular knitting: The body is cast on and knit in the round using a 21" circular needle or larger, eliminating the need for seaming the body panels together.
- Sleeve construction: Sleeves are also worked in the round from the cuff upward using double-pointed needles (DPNs), ensuring seamless, tubular sleeves.
- Three-needle bind-off: The body and sleeves are joined using a three-needle bind-off technique, which creates a strong, finished seam at the armholes.
- Raglan yoke shaping: The yoke features raglan shaping worked in the round, creating diagonal lines from the underarms to the neckline for a flattering fit.
- Short-row shaping: Short rows are strategically worked to raise the back neck, providing ergonomic comfort and preventing the neckline from gaping.
- Neckline finishing: The pattern includes options for either a turtleneck or crewneck finish.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in this pullover is the diamond brocade stitch. This decorative stitch creates a textured, dimensional surface with interlocking diamond motifs characteristic of brocade fabric. The diamond brocade stitch is worked over the body and yoke sections, providing visual interest and a sophisticated appearance. The gauge for this pattern is 20 stitches by 32 rows over 4" x 4" when worked in the diamond brocade stitch and measured after blocking, making accurate gauge checking essential for proper fit.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for DK weight yarn, specifically Rita Mae Yarns Merino DK in the colorway Blue Suede Shoes. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (36") requires 950 yards across 4 balls, while the largest size (64") requires 1,990 yards across 8 balls. The merino content provides softness, breathability, and excellent stitch definition for showcasing the diamond brocade pattern.
The recommended needles are US size 2.5 (3.00 mm) circular needles with a 21" cord or larger for the body, paired with a matching set of DPNs for sleeve construction. Additional tools include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a tape measure for checking gauge and garment dimensions, and scissors for finishing.
Skill Level and Pattern Characteristics
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Boxy Brocade Pullover is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle stitch patterns and shaping techniques. The pattern description notes it as an "adventures beginner" level for the body construction, indicating that while the techniques are accessible, the diamond brocade stitch pattern requires attention to detail and pattern reading. The inclusion of raglan shaping, short-row techniques, and neckline finishing makes this an excellent project for building advanced skills while creating a wearable, fashionable garment.
