Bookmark "Granny"
By OITo Crochet
Product Description
A very elegant bookmark made up of 4 grannies according to an original pattern of Oito Crochet. The bookmark is made even more precious by the addition of beautiful finishes. The very sober colours used here, grey and black, can be replaced by brighter colours, depending on everyone's taste. The model photographed was made with a thin pearl cotton (20) but you can also use a pearl cotton n° 10 with a slightly larger result. The model is not difficult to achieve, it is the regularity of the work that is most important. The PDF tutorial includes a main diagram and 11 detailed diagrams as well as a step-by-step explanation with 68 photos. A very original gift to offer!
Granny Bookmark by OITo Crochet
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a decorative bookmark featuring a classic granny-inspired design. The finished bookmark measures approximately 18 cm in length with a 3.5 cm width, making it an ideal size for holding your place in books while adding a handmade touch to your reading collection.
What Is Being Made
The Granny bookmark is a small, functional crochet accessory that combines traditional granny square motifs with an elongated bookmark format. This intermediate-level project is perfect for crocheters looking to create quick, personalized gifts or add to their own collection of reading accessories.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to achieve its finished structure:
- Adjustable Ring (Anneau magique): The pattern begins with an adjustable ring, allowing for a neat center point without a visible hole
- Chain Foundation (Chaînette): Used to establish the base structure of the bookmark
- Slip Stitch (Maille coulée): Applied for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Color Changes: The pattern incorporates multiple color changes, adding visual interest to the finished piece
Stitches Used
The bookmark utilizes a variety of crochet stitches to create texture and structure:
- Single Crochet (Maille serrée): Provides a tight, dense fabric base
- Double Crochet (Bride): Creates taller, more open sections within the design
- Half Double Crochet (Demi Bride): Offers a medium height between single and double crochet
- 3 Double Crochet Cluster (Mouchet 3 brides): Forms decorative bobble or cluster elements characteristic of granny-style designs
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for Coton perlé 20 (size 20 pearled cotton), a fine, lustrous thread ideal for delicate crochet work. This 3-ply lace-weight thread creates a refined, detailed finish suitable for bookmark applications.
Hook Size: A size 1 (EU) / size 10 (USA) crochet hook is recommended. The pattern includes a helpful tip: for crochet jewelry and small accessories like bookmarks, using a smaller hook than the yarn manufacturer suggests produces superior results with better stitch definition and structure.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and techniques. Crocheters should be comfortable reading crochet diagrams, executing color changes, and working with fine thread and small hooks. The pattern provides resource links for reference on stitch techniques, color changes, and diagram interpretation to support successful completion.
