Product Description
Bombay Sapphire is a classic pullover, designed to showcase a special yarn in a gorgeous color with simple stockinette.
A few details add texture and interest to the design - a scalloped pattern around the neckline gives a Peter Pan effect to the edge of the sweater, and "waves" around the wrists echo this pattern on the arms. Two buttons on the button band add a pop of color, and the fit is easy to modify for your shape in terms of length, width, or sleeve choice. In a bright color it's a perfect statement piece, and in a neutral it could go with just about anything.
Bombay is designed for the Plucky Knitter's light worsted yarns - Primo Worsted and Plucky Sweater. These yarns are just a bit more delicate than your usual worsteds. And they are kind of perfect to wear in a light layering piece - or even against your skin (I have only a tank under this one!).
Sample is in Plucky Primo Worsted. Other listed yarns are suggested substitues.
Bombay Sapphire Knitted Sweater by BabyCocktails
Project Overview
Bombay Sapphire is a classic pullover sweater designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails, created to showcase beautiful solid-color yarn in a timeless silhouette. This intermediate-level knitting pattern features a vintage-inspired design with a fitted, feminine shape and strategic textural details that elevate the simplicity of the stockinette base.
What Is Being Made
This is a women's knitted pullover sweater available in multiple sizes, ranging from extra-small through 3XL. The sweater is designed as a classic crew-neck pullover with a fitted body and tailored sleeves, making it a versatile wardrobe staple that works across various personal styles and occasions.
Design Details and Features
- Neckline: Peter Pan collar detail that adds subtle texture and a vintage feminine touch to the top edge
- Sleeves: Smaller wave-pattern details around the wrists that echo the collar design and provide visual interest
- Body: Classic fitted construction in stockinette stitch for a clean, timeless appearance
- Embellishments: Two decorative buttons sewn onto the ribbing for a pop of color
- Customization: Easily modified for width and length adjustments to suit individual preferences
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Bombay Sapphire employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch throughout the sweater is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric that allows the yarn color to be the focal point. Ribbing is used at the cuffs, hem, and neckline for structure and elasticity. The textural wave details at the collar and wrists require shaping techniques that add visual dimension without overwhelming the overall simplicity of the design.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn. The designer recommends either Plucky Knitter Primo Worsted (200 yards per skein) or Plucky Sweater (270 yards per skein) in the colorway Bleu. Yardage requirements range from 750 yards for the smallest size to 1,350 yards for the largest size, depending on the selected size. Knitters will also need appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn and two buttons for the finishing details.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in stockinette stitch, ribbing, and basic shaping. The straightforward construction and minimal complex techniques make it an accessible project for those looking to expand beyond beginner patterns while maintaining confidence in their work.
