Bohéme Sweater for Men by Faroeknit
What is Being Made
The Bohéme sweater for men is a classic knitted pullover design created by designer Randi Hjelm Debes of Faroeknit. This intermediate-level garment features a modern yet timeless aesthetic, combining a structured body with fitted sleeves. The sweater is worked primarily in stockinette stitch with ribbed detailing, making it a versatile piece suitable for everyday wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The sweater is constructed using circular knitting, worked in the round to create seamless sections. The design incorporates two-color knitting, utilizing a base colour and contrast colour to add visual interest and depth to the finished garment. Stitch increases are strategically placed throughout the sleeve construction to achieve proper shaping and fit. The pattern also requires working with both circular needles and double-pointed needles, demonstrating essential techniques for transitioning between different needle types during garment construction.
Stitches Used
- Ribbed Pattern: *K2, P2* (knit 2, purl 2) ribbing used for cuff and waistband sections to create elastic, fitted edges
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used for the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic fabric surface
- Stitch Increases: Strategic increases worked at regular intervals (every 6 to 8 rounds depending on size) to shape the sleeves
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Bohéme sweater is designed for worsted weight yarn, specifically Snældan 3-ply yarn at 9 wraps per inch (wpi), though any worsted weight yarn of similar characteristics will work. The pattern is available in three sizes with the following yardage requirements:
- Size S: 400g of base colour and 70g of contrast colour
- Size M: 450g of base colour and 100g of contrast colour
- Size L: 500g of base colour and 100g of contrast colour
Needles and Tools
This pattern requires circular needles and 5 double-pointed needles in sizes 4.5 mm (US 7) and 5 mm (US 8). The smaller needle size is used for ribbed sections to maintain elasticity, while the larger size accommodates the stockinette stitch body. Additional supplies include a wool or tapestry needle for finishing and four stitch holders for managing stitches during construction.
Pattern Overview
The Bohéme sweater construction begins with casting on stitches for the sleeve cuffs, which are worked in K2, P2 ribbing for approximately 5 centimeters (2 inches). After ribbing is complete, the needle size is increased and strategic stitch increases are introduced to shape the sleeves as they are knitted in the round. The two-color design adds sophisticated visual interest while remaining accessible for intermediate knitters. This downloadable PDF pattern from Faroeknit provides a complete roadmap for creating a polished, professional-quality men's sweater.
