Product Description

With this easy pattern, you can make a super cute crochet koala. This .pdf crochet pattern is written in standard American crochet terms.

Materials For this crochet koala you’ll need worsted weight yarn (Lètt Lopi) and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need one main colour: grey (1/3 of a 100-yard skein) and some white for the chin and buff and a tiny amount of a mixed black for the nose. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: 0057 & 0051 and 0052 (0005) for the nose.

The crochet pattern contains An intro with useful info. List of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right. All my patterns are text edited for correct English and have been tested by an experienced crocheter before publishing.

Boeloe the Koala Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

Boeloe is a small amigurumi-style crochet koala toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk of Son's Popkes. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished koala doll measuring approximately 4.7 inches (12 centimeters) in sitting height when made with the recommended yarn specifications. The project is classified as beginner-level crochet, making it accessible to crafters new to amigurumi construction.

Crochet Techniques Used

The koala is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The doll is worked in the round using continuous spirals rather than joined rounds, which creates a seamless appearance. The pattern employs color changes throughout the construction, which are indicated using color-coded instructions to help crafters identify exactly where yarn color transitions occur within each round. Stitch markers are essential tools for this project, used to clearly mark the beginning of each new round as the work progresses upward in a spiral formation.

Stitches Used

While the PDF content provided does not detail the complete stitch list, the pattern utilizes standard American crochet terminology throughout. The construction method of working in continuous rounds and spirals suggests the use of basic stitches commonly found in amigurumi patterns, such as single crochet for shaping and structure.

Materials and Yarn

The pattern is designed to be worked with aran weight yarn, a medium-weight option that produces the recommended finished size. The designer specifically recommends using a fuzzy yarn to achieve the authentic koala appearance, with Istex Lètt lopi (100% wool) cited as the yarn used in the original design. The fuzzy texture of this yarn type enhances the soft, cuddly aesthetic characteristic of a koala toy. Crochet hook size is not specified in the provided content, though it should be selected according to the yarn weight and desired fabric density. Stitch markers are required to track round progression, and a yarn needle is useful for weaving in ends and assembling pieces if needed.

Pattern Notes

Crafters should be aware that the finished size of Boeloe is dependent on both the yarn weight chosen and individual crochet tension. Tighter crochet work will produce a smaller finished doll, while looser tension will result in a larger toy. This means eye size and other details may need adjustment based on personal gauge. The pattern is written exclusively in standard American crochet abbreviations and terminology, making it important to review the instructions before beginning if you are unfamiliar with these conventions.
