Materials For this crochet rhino you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need two colours of yarn: grey, about half a skein of 100 yards, and a small amount of light grey. For the eyes I’ve used 5 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). A pipe cleaner to bend the tail is optional. Lopi colour numbers: 0057 and 0054.

Boason the Rhino Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

Boason is a small crocheted rhino toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This amigurumi-style stuffed animal measures approximately 5 inches (13 centimeters) when sitting, making it an ideal handmade gift or decorative piece. The pattern produces a three-dimensional rhino figure worked entirely in the round using spiral crochet techniques.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The rhino is worked in the round using spiral crochet, a technique where stitches are continuously joined without traditional round closures. Sonja van der Wijk recommends using a stitch marker to clearly mark the beginning of each round, moving it up as you progress through the pattern. This approach creates seamless, continuous spirals that form the body and features of the toy.

Color changes are incorporated into the design. When changing colors, the pattern specifies that you must change color in the last loop of a stitch, ensuring the loop remaining on your hook is already the new color. This technique means the next stitch you work will be in the new color rather than the color you changed from, creating clean color transitions.

Stitches Used

While the complete stitch list is referenced in the full pattern documentation, this project utilizes standard American crochet terminology. The pattern is written using conventional American crochet abbreviations and stitch names, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with this standard notation system.

Materials and Yarn

The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. Sonja van der Wijk strongly recommends using a fuzzy yarn for optimal results, as the textured surface enhances the rhino's tactile appeal and realistic appearance. The designer used Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn, for the original sample. The finished size depends on both your yarn choice and individual crochet tension, so experimenting with yarn weights may produce larger or smaller versions of Boason.

The pattern also notes that eye size may need adjustment based on your yarn weight and tension, despite the designer's recommendations included in the full instructions.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with spiral techniques and color changes. The designer provides additional tips and tricks resources through Son's Popkes to support crafters working on this project.
