Blue-tit and Nuts Knitted Ornament by Phoenixknits
What is Being Made
This is a decorative hanging ornament featuring a British Blue-tit bird attached to a string of knitted peanuts. The finished bird measures 5½ inches long from the top of the head to the end of the tail. The peanuts can be made in any quantity depending on the desired length of the finished ornament, making this a customizable craft project suitable for seasonal decoration or gift-giving.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project designed by Phoenixknits for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern uses traditional knitting techniques to construct a three-dimensional toy ornament. The design demonstrates how flat knitted pieces can be shaped and assembled into a realistic bird form with anatomical details.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern employs stocking stitch as the primary stitch throughout the project. The tail is constructed as a single continuous piece that is folded in half during assembly, requiring careful attention to the pattern instructions to ensure proper stitch counts and shaping. Mattress stitch is the recommended seaming technique for joining pieces together, as this method creates invisible, professional-looking seams ideal for toy construction.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project requires less than 10 grams total of DK weight yarn in multiple colors to create the bird's various features:
- Blue yarn for the tail and back
- Olive green yarn for accent areas
- Pale yellow yarn for details
- White yarn for highlights
- Black yarn scraps for fine details
Needles and Tension
The pattern is worked on 3mm needles in stocking stitch. While tension is noted as not critical for this ornament project, the reference tension is 7 stitches and 11 rows per inch over stocking stitch on 3mm needles. This relatively loose gauge is typical for DK weight yarn and contributes to the soft, fabric-like quality of the finished toy.
Pattern Difficulty and Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have solid foundational skills including casting on, basic stitch work, increasing stitches, and seaming. The pattern includes specific notes about increasing methods to ensure proper stitch counts, indicating that precise technique execution is important for successful completion. The three-dimensional shaping and color work add complexity beyond beginner patterns.
