Product Description
Materials: 450 yards #4 Medium Weight Yarn US K Hook/6.5 mm Finished measurements: 4" wide x 17" tall
I made this hat pattern for the Lion Brand's campaign against Bullying.
I had kids in mind when I was designing the Slouchy part of the hat. When I was finished my daughter and husband both said it looked like a Dr. Seuss hat, so I named it "Blue Seuss."
The hat is made in the round with row repeats to make the little arches. I had a lot of fun with this hat! Taking pictures of it was a chore, but I LOVE this hat!

Blue Seuss Slouchy Hat by Jo's Crafty Hook
Project Overview
The Blue Seuss Slouchy Hat is a beginner-friendly crochet hat design created by independent designer Jo's Crafty Hook. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a slouchy-style hat that measures 17 inches tall with a crown diameter of 4 inches, making it a comfortable, relaxed-fit hat suitable for various head sizes. The finished hat uses approximately 3-4 ounces of blue medium weight yarn, resulting in a cozy accessory perfect for casual wear.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques ideal for beginners looking to expand their skills. The hat is worked in the round using the Magic Circle method, which creates a seamless center point. The construction involves consistent slip stitching to join rounds and establish structure throughout the piece. The pattern incorporates shell stitch elements, which add decorative texture and visual interest to the design while remaining manageable for newer crocheters.
Crochet Stitches and Abbreviations
- Ch – Chain stitch, the foundation stitch in crochet
- SC – Single Crochet, a short, tight stitch
- HDC – Half Double Crochet, a medium-height stitch
- DC – Double Crochet, a taller stitch used extensively in this pattern
- SS – Slip Stitch, used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Ch Sp – Chain Space, the gap created by chain stitches
- SCBLO – Single Crochet in Back Loop Only, creating textured ribbed effects
- Beg Shell – Beginning Shell stitch: Chain 3, Double Crochet, chain 1, 2 Double Crochets all in the same stitch
- Shell – Standard Shell stitch: 2 Double Crochets, chain 1, 2 Double Crochets all in the same stitch
Yarn and Hook Requirements
This pattern calls for 3-4 ounces of blue medium weight yarn (also known as #4 weight yarn), which provides good stitch definition and drape for a slouchy hat. The recommended hook size is US K or 6.5 mm, which pairs appropriately with the medium weight yarn to achieve the specified gauge. The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 Double Crochets in 1 row of Double Crochets equals 1 inch, ensuring proper fit and finished dimensions.
Additional Materials and Tools
Beyond yarn and hook, you will need a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the hat neatly. Scissors are required for cutting yarn. The pattern assumes familiarity with or access to instructional resources for the Magic Circle technique, with a note that YouTube provides excellent visual demonstrations for this foundational method.
Pattern Structure and Construction Notes
The hat construction begins with the Magic Circle, which allows for a closed center without a visible hole. The pattern works upward in rounds, with each round building upon the previous one. Key construction notes include: the chain 3 counts as a Double Crochet throughout the pattern, all work is completed in the round with slip stitches joining each round, and specific stitches are worked into designated chain spaces or stitches as indicated in the instructions. This round-based construction method is typical for hat patterns and creates a seamless, professional appearance.
