Blankets in Sirdar Snuggly Rascal DK – Pattern 4770

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Sirdar presents four distinct baby and nursery blankets, each worked in Sirdar Snuggly Rascal DK yarn. All four designs finish at approximately 90–91 cm square (around 35½–36 inches), making them generous, wrap-worthy blankets ideal as gifts or everyday nursery essentials. The pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty, meaning knitters with a solid grasp of basic techniques and a willingness to work cables, lace, or textured stitch patterns will find it very achievable.

Materials and Needles

Every blanket in this pattern is knitted using Sirdar Snuggly Rascal DK, a soft double knitting weight yarn sold in 50g balls. The yarn amounts vary by design:

  • Garter Stitch Blanket – 9 balls in shade 453
  • Crossed Drop Stitch Blanket – 7 balls in shade 450
  • Cable Blanket – 9 balls in shade 455
  • Lace Blanket – 7 balls in shade 452

The pattern notes that these blankets are also suitable for Sirdar Snuggly DK, Snuggly Baby Crofter DK, Snuggly Pearls DK, Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK, and Snuggly Baby Spots DK, though yarn amounts may vary when substituting.

All four designs are worked on 4mm (UK8 / USA6) knitting needles. An 80 cm 4mm circular needle is recommended (if required) for the Garter Stitch, Crossed Drop Stitch, and Cable blankets — useful for accommodating the large stitch count comfortably. A cable needle is also required for the Cable Blanket.

The stated tension is 21 stitches and 40 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over garter stitch on 4mm needles.

Design One: Garter Stitch Blanket

Finished size: approximately 91 x 91 cm (36 x 36 in)

The Garter Stitch Blanket is the most classic of the four designs. Garter stitch — created by knitting every row — produces a dense, reversible, ridged fabric that lies flat naturally, making it an excellent choice for a blanket that needs no blocking to behave. Despite its simplicity, garter stitch creates a beautifully tactile surface with a satisfying weight and drape.

This design uses the knit stitch as its primary technique. The large stitch count across a 91 cm width means a circular needle may be preferred simply to hold the stitches comfortably, even though the blanket is worked flat rather than in the round.

Design Two: Crossed Drop Stitch Blanket

Finished size: approximately 90 x 91 cm (35½ x 36 in)

The Crossed Drop Stitch Blanket introduces a more decorative textured technique. Drop stitch knitting involves deliberately wrapping the yarn multiple times around the needle when working a stitch — in this pattern the special stitch Kwrap4 (knit the next stitch wrapping the yarn four times around the needle) is used — and then on the following row, dropping the extra wraps to create elongated, dramatic loops. The K3below technique (knitting into a stitch three rows below the current row) is also employed, gathering and crossing those elongated strands to create the distinctive crossed effect that gives this blanket its name.

  • Stitches and techniques used: knit, purl, Kwrap4 (yarn wrapped four times), K3below (knit into stitch 3 rows below), yarn forward, yarn back

The resulting fabric has an open, almost woven appearance with elegant vertical texture — a striking contrast to the
