Product Description

This shawlette can be made in any thickness of yarn and the size varied by the number of “points” in the border – this is made first, in a sideways band, and the top section, striped or in a single colour, is then picked up from the straight side of this band. The pattern is given in text and chart form, with photo tutorial on intarsia techniques. Three samples are given in the pattern to show the effects of using 10 ply worsted, 4 ply fingering and 2 ply lace-weight yarns. The 2 ply lace sample (very delicate and light – lovely as a neck scarf) used 40 gms 2 ply Malabrigo Lace and 10 gms silk wool mix on 3.25 (US 3) mm needles; 4 ply/fingering sample used 105 gms skein of Indigodragonfly MCN sock yarn plus 25 gms Malabrigo lace used double on 3.75 (US 5) mm needles; and the 10 ply worsted version (a warm shoulder wrap) used 165 gms Cascade Eco Alpaca plus 35 gms of the same yarn in a contrast colour on 4.5 (US 7) mm needles.

Birsay Shawlette by Rian Anderson

What Is Being Made

The Birsay Shawlette is a crescent-shaped knitted shawlette designed by Rian Anderson. This intermediate-level knitting project offers versatility in construction, allowing crafters to choose between a plain or striped top section. The finished piece features a distinctive crescent silhouette with a decorative lace border and a deeper center point, making it suitable for various occasions and styling preferences.

Design Structure and Construction

The Birsay Shawlette employs a unique construction method where the border is knitted first as a sideways band. Once the border is complete, the top section is then picked up from the straight side of this band. This approach allows for flexibility in the finished dimensions and creates a seamless integration between the border and the main body of the shawlette. The striped or single-color top section can be customized according to individual preference.

Yarn Weight Options and Finished Dimensions

The pattern accommodates three different yarn weights, each producing distinct finished measurements:

  • 2 ply lace-weight yarn: Creates a delicate finished shawlette measuring approximately 130 cm (51 inches) along the top length at the ends of the striped section, with a depth of 30 cm (12 inches) to the center point. This version features 15 points in the border and 130 points total in the border construction.
  • 4 ply fingering-weight yarn: Produces a shawlette measuring approximately 150 cm (59 inches) along the top length and 40 cm (16 inches) deep to the center point, with 13 points featured in the border.
  • 10 ply worsted-weight yarn: Results in a shawlette measuring approximately 130 cm (51 inches) along the top length and 40 cm (16 inches) deep to the center point, with 11 points in the border.

The pattern demonstrates that the Birsay Shawlette can be made in any yarn thickness, allowing crafters to customize the finished size and drape according to their preferences and available materials.

Knitting Techniques

The Birsay Shawlette utilizes sideways knitting construction, a technique where the shawlette is worked horizontally rather than from top to bottom. This method requires picking up stitches from a previously completed section, demonstrating intermediate-level knitting skills. The pattern includes fundamental stitch abbreviations such as sl 1 (slip 1 stitch), which is executed by placing the needle as if to work a knit stitch.

Materials Required

Crafters will need knitting needles appropriate to their chosen yarn weight and a selection of yarn in the desired thickness. The pattern provides flexibility in yarn selection, accommodating lace-weight, fingering-weight, and worsted-weight options. The choice of yarn directly influences the final dimensions and drape of the completed shawlette, making material selection an important consideration in the project planning stage.
