Product Description

Biostratigraphy is a top-down crescent shawl featuring a sampler of stitch patterns. Beginning with textured short rows, the shawl organically transitions through different layers of texture and lace.

Yarn: If desired, each section can be worked in a different color. The approximate yarn usage by section is as follows:

Section 1 (short rows): 65 yards (60 meters) Section 2 (texture): 120 yards (110 meters) Section 3 (lace): 120 yards (110 meters) Section 4 (diamonds): 170 yards (155 meters) Section 5 (edging): 60 yards (55 meters)

Yardage estimates are only given for the pattern as written. However, additional repeats can be worked in all sections other than sections 1 and 5 to make a larger shawl. Increasing the number of repeats in a given section will increase the yarn needed in that section and all subsequent sections.

Skills needed: knit, purl, slip stitch, wrap and turn short rows, decreases (ssk, k2tog, cdd, psso)

Biostratigraphy Crescent Shawl by Allison Janocha

What Is Being Made

Biostratigraphy is a top-down crescent shawl designed by Allison Janocha as an intermediate-level knitting project. The finished shawl measures 13 inches deep by 80 inches wide, making it a substantial accessory piece suitable for layering or draping. The design concept centers on a geological metaphor, with the shawl structured as distinct layers that progress organically from textured sections to lace sections, creating visual depth similar to stratified rock formations.

Design Structure and Sections

The shawl is organized into four distinct sections, each building upon the previous one:

  • Section 1: Begins with textured short rows, establishing the foundation of the crescent shape and using approximately 65 yards (60 meters)
  • Section 2: Introduces transitional textures, consuming approximately 120 yards (110 meters), with the option to add repeats for increased width
  • Section 3: Continues the textured-to-lace progression, also requiring approximately 120 yards (110 meters), similarly adjustable through additional repeats
  • Section 4: Features lace stitches as the final layer, using approximately 170 yards and customizable for experienced knitters comfortable integrating new stitches into established patterns

Stitches and Techniques

Biostratigraphy employs a sampler approach to stitch work, incorporating both textured stitches and lace stitches throughout its construction. The shawl begins with short rows worked from the top down, a foundational technique that creates the crescent shape and establishes the shawl's three-dimensional drape. The progression from texture to lace creates visual interest and demonstrates multiple stitch categories within a single project, making this an educational intermediate pattern that builds knitter skills across different stitch families.

Yarn Requirements and Materials

Biostratigraphy calls for fingering weight yarn in a single color, totaling 500 yards (460 meters) for the shawl as written. The pattern accommodates various fiber compositions, with sample projects worked in:

  • Yarn Love Marie Antoinette: 80% merino, 10% nylon stellina, 10% cashmere blend (variegated colorway)
  • Koigu kpppm: 100% merino wool (semi-solid colorway)

The use of fingering weight yarn creates the delicate fabric necessary for both the textured and lace sections to display properly. Knitters will need appropriate needles for fingering weight yarn, typically in the US 1-3 range, though specific needle size recommendations should be confirmed in the full pattern.

Customization Options

The pattern offers flexibility for knitters seeking to adjust the finished size. Sections 2 and 3 allow for additional repeats to increase the shawl's width, while Section 4 can be modified by knitters comfortable with adapting stitch patterns. This adjustability means yardage requirements may increase beyond the base 500 yards depending on customization choices, with the pattern providing section-by-section yardage breakdowns to guide modifications.
