It works up fast.
Pattern is beginner's friendly as I designed it with no difficult points! I have many step by step photos and instructions. A pattern project written at the beginning of my pattern will make clear all crochet steps.
Big Granny Wrap by Mary Grasia
What Is Being Made
The Big Granny Wrap is a large crocheted shawl designed by Mary Grasia. This is a substantial wrap project that measures 22.44 inches wide by 70 inches long, making it an oversized accessory perfect for layering and warmth. The finished dimensions create a generous garment suitable for draping across the shoulders or wrapping around the body multiple times.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using crochet as the primary craft method. The wrap features straightforward crochet construction that is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it accessible to crafters with some foundational crochet experience but offering enough structure to provide a satisfying building project.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Big Granny Wrap employs several fundamental crochet stitches to create its texture and structure:
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, which creates a medium-height, dense fabric
- Chain (ch) – Used for foundation chains and shaping elements
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – Applied for joining rounds and finishing edges
- Single Crochet (sc) – Incorporated for specific stitch variations
- Double Crochet (dc) – Used in cluster formations
- Cluster Stitch – Defined as 3 double crochets worked together in one stitch, adding textural interest and dimension
The pattern uses a repeating structure, allowing crafters to customize the wrap length by adjusting the number of foundation chains. The gauge is measured at 7 half double crochet pattern stitches equaling 3.93 inches (10 cm) in width, with 4 rows of half double crochet measuring 2.36 inches (6 cm) in height.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Big Granny Wrap requires 6 skeins in total of worsted weight or aran weight yarn. The designer's sample uses a blend of two yarn brands:
- Lion Brand Vanna's Choice (worsted weight, 100g/156m/171yds) – 3 skeins in color 151 Charcoal and 2 skeins in color 149 Silver Grey
- Patons Wool Blend Aran (aran weight, 100g/185m/202yds) – 1 skein in color 52 Black or color 095 Charcoal
The pattern is compatible with any worsted weight or aran weight yarn blend, whether wool, acrylic, or wool-acrylic combinations. The total yardage needed is approximately 1,000 yards based on the sample specifications.
Tools Required
Crafters will need a 9mm crochet hook (size M/13) and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the project.
Pattern Customization
The pattern notes that crafters can adjust the finished length by modifying the number of foundation chains – chaining less creates a shorter shawl, while chaining more produces a longer wrap. This flexibility allows makers to tailor the wrap to their specific preferences and yarn availability.
