Bicycle Crochet Applique Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What is Being Made
This is a crochet applique pattern for creating a decorative bicycle design. The pattern produces a finished bicycle piece that can be used as an applique to embellish garments, accessories, or other crochet projects. The design includes detailed components such as wheels, spokes, and frame elements that are crocheted separately and then assembled together using sewing thread and a needle.
Available Sizes
The pattern offers two size options depending on yarn weight selection:
- Large Bicycle: Measures 18cm x 13cm (7" x 5") when worked in 8 ply wool
- Medium Bicycle: Measures 13cm x 8cm (5" x 3") when worked in 4 ply crochet cotton
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques to construct the bicycle applique. The pattern utilizes the following stitches and methods:
- Magic Loop: Used to create circular foundations for components such as the wheel centres
- Chain (ch): Foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc): Primary stitch for creating dense, structured fabric
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Medium-height stitch used for various pattern sections
- Double Crochet (dc): Taller stitch incorporated into the design
- Treble Crochet (tr): Advanced stitch variation used in specific areas
- Triple Treble Crochet (tr tr): Extra-tall stitch for dimensional elements
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and connecting components
Wheel Construction
The bicycle design features wheels that are constructed in multiple parts. Each wheel begins with a Wheel Centre created using a magic loop foundation. The crocheter works 8 single crochet stitches into the magic loop, then pulls the circle tight and joins with a slip stitch to the first stitch before fastening off. The pattern continues with Wheel Spokes that are added to complete the wheel structure, creating a realistic bicycle wheel appearance.
Materials Required
The pattern specifies the following materials for construction:
- Yarn: 4 ply crochet cotton in multiple colors including red, grey, black, green, white, and yellow for the medium-sized bicycle. Alternatively, 8 ply wool can be used for the larger version
- Crochet Hook: A 1.25mm hook is recommended for working with 4 ply crochet cotton
- Assembly Tools: Scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, and a sewing needle with sewing thread for stitching the crocheted components together
- Optional Embellishments: Small beads may be added and stitched to flower elements for additional decorative detail
