Product Description

At 16cm/6¼in tall, Beverley is the bigger blue tit who’ll break your bird table as well as your heart! This hedgerow honey’s body is knitted in two separate pieces, which are then joined using mattress stitch so there’s no intricate intarsia or fiddly fair isle. Even better, you’ll only need small amounts of yarn, making her cheap (or should that be cheep?) to create!

All the pieces are knitted flat on straight needles and seamed afterwards so it's a good idea to seam and stuff the pieces as you go along. You'll be pleased to know that this pattern has been reviewed by a professional technical editor to ensure that it's super-easy to follow!

Beverley the Blue Tit Knitted Toy

What is Being Made

Beverley the Blue Tit is a charming knitted stuffed toy designed by Trish Roberts. Standing at 16cm (6¼ inches) tall, this decorative bird figure captures the delightful character of a blue tit with its distinctive coloring and proportions. The finished toy is suitable for display, gifting, or as part of a collection of handmade wildlife-inspired crafts.

Construction Method and Techniques

This knitting project uses a straightforward two-piece construction approach that minimizes complexity while maintaining visual appeal. Rather than employing intricate colorwork techniques such as intarsia or fair isle, which require careful yarn management and can be challenging for intermediate knitters, Beverley is constructed by knitting two separate body pieces that are subsequently joined together. This methodical approach makes the project more accessible and allows crafters to focus on fundamental knitting skills.

The two body pieces are joined using mattress stitch, a professional seaming technique that creates an invisible vertical seam. Mattress stitch is worked from the right side of the fabric using a tapestry needle, making it ideal for joining stockinette stitch pieces with a neat, polished finish that requires no additional finishing work. This technique eliminates the appearance of traditional seams and contributes to the toy's refined appearance.

Once the body sections are assembled and seamed, the toy is stuffed with toy filling to create its three-dimensional form. Final details are added using hand-sewing techniques, including the attachment of eyes with fine thread and a delicate sewing needle.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the primary fabric structure
  • Purl (P) – used in combination with knit stitches to create textural variation
  • Stocking stitch (St st) – the primary fabric construction, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knitted surface
  • Make one increase (M1) – a method for increasing stitches by picking up the horizontal loop between stitches from front to back, allowing for shaping without visible holes
  • Mattress stitch – the seaming technique used to join the two body pieces with an invisible vertical seam

Materials and Specifications

This project is economical in its yarn requirements, using only small quantities of DK weight yarn. The color palette includes 15g (½oz / 42m / 46yds) of DK yarn in each of three primary colors: yellow, green, and sky blue. Additional small oddments of DK yarn in royal blue, white, and black provide accent colors and details.

The project requires a pair of 2¾mm straight needles, appropriate for working with DK weight yarn at the specified tension. Additional materials include a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, toy stuffing for filling the completed body, a tapestry needle for mattress stitch seaming and weaving in ends, large-headed pins for positioning pieces during assembly, 50cm (20 inches) of white thread, and a fine sewing needle for embroidering the eye details.

The pattern specifies a tension of 23 stitches and 35 rows measured over 10x10cm (4x4 inches) in unstuffed stocking stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions of 16cm in height.

Difficulty Level

Beverley the Blue Tit is classified as an intermediate knitting project. While the fundamental stitches employed are relatively straightforward, the combination of shaping techniques, two-piece construction, mattress stitch seaming, and finishing details requires solid foundational knitting knowledge and some experience with garment assembly. The avoidance of complex colorwork techniques makes this project more approachable than many intermediate toys, making it an excellent choice for knitters looking to develop their skills in toy construction and finishing techniques.
