Product Description
Berry Cardigan construction start at the front part above the chest going up to the shoulder then continue to the back. After the back reach the same length as the front, there will be joining round and work all stitches (front and back) in the same row. This construction designed to catered the color changes of Scheepjes Whirl’s gradient color. And also to avoid seaming, as cleverly stated by one of my test knitter, Mrs. Devi.
Simple cardigan with lace panel on the back, a little waist shaping and a beautiful little detail of Latvian braid on the button band. The lace panel available on written and chart pattern.
The length of the cardigan can be worked as long as you like, there will be a section of the pattern for these. There are small notes throughout the pattern for Whirl user, based on my project.
This project will need 3 colors of yarn, color A for whole body of cardigan, color B for the Latvian braid, color C for ribbing.
The pattern has been test knitted.
Happy knitting
Berry Cardigan by Sally Yanita
What is Being Made
The Berry Cardigan is an intermediate-level long cardigan designed by Sally Yanita, featuring a sophisticated blend of simplicity and decorative detail. This knitted cardigan is specifically engineered to showcase gradient yarn colorways, with finished bust circumferences ranging from 82 cm (32") to 132 cm (52") across six sizes from XS to XXL. The design prioritizes maintaining the visual impact of color transitions throughout the garment construction.
Design Features and Construction
This cardigan incorporates several distinctive design elements that elevate it beyond a basic pattern. The back features a lace panel that adds visual interest and texture to the garment. Subtle waist shaping is integrated into the construction to provide a flattering silhouette. The button band showcases a Latvian braid detail, a traditional knitting technique that creates an ornamental edge perfect for finishing a cardigan opening.
The construction method has been carefully considered to work harmoniously with gradient yarn colorways like Scheepjes Whirl. The pattern design ensures that the color changes flow naturally throughout the garment rather than being disrupted by seams or construction techniques.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Berry Cardigan employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques:
- Lace knitting – used for the back panel to create an open, decorative stitch pattern
- Latvian braid – a traditional braided edging technique applied to the button band for a refined finish
- Waist shaping – strategic increases and decreases to create garment shaping
- Gradient yarn management – construction designed to showcase color transitions effectively
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Berry Cardigan is designed to work with 3-ply, 4-ply, and sport weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The designer's inspiration piece features Scheepjes Whirl, a gradient yarn that transitions through multiple colors. Knitters will require appropriate needles sized for their chosen yarn weight to achieve the correct gauge and fabric drape for this cardigan.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills in basic stitches and shaping. The inclusion of lace panels and the Latvian braid technique requires familiarity with more advanced stitch work and the ability to read and execute pattern instructions with precision.
