Berroco Filigree – Lace Cardigan and Tank Pattern by Alison Green
The Berroco Filigree pattern, designed by Alison Green and published by Berroco, is a beautifully detailed knitting collection featuring two coordinating garments: a lace cardigan and a lace tank. Both pieces are united by an elegant Lace Rib stitch pattern that gives the collection its name — a delicate, filigree-like texture reminiscent of fine lacework. Rated as an intermediate skill level, this pattern is a rewarding project for knitters who are comfortable with lace techniques and are ready to explore more refined construction methods. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it instantly accessible for knitters worldwide.
The Cardigan
The Filigree Cardigan is a long-sleeved, open-front cardigan worked in a combination of techniques to achieve a polished, structured finish. It is designed with a generous 7½ inch / 19 cm gap at the center front, giving it an elegant, relaxed drape rather than a traditional buttoned closure.
Sizing and Fit
The cardigan is offered in a wide range of sizes, with a finished bust measurement spanning from 36 to 69 inches / 91.5 to 175.5 cm across twelve sizes. The recommended ease is approximately 2–4 inches / 5–10 cm of positive ease, making for a comfortable, relaxed fit. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size 39 inches / 99 cm. Finished lengths range from approximately 22½ to 27 inches / 57 to 68.5 cm depending on the size chosen.
Construction Techniques
- Bottom-up construction: The cardigan is worked from the lower edge upward, a traditional approach that gives knitters excellent control over length adjustments before the armhole shaping begins.
- Seamed finishing: Pieces are worked flat and then seamed together, producing clean, stable seams that help the garment hold its shape — particularly important when working with lace patterns that benefit from firm structure at the joins.
- Worked flat and in the round: Sections of the cardigan are worked flat on circular needles, while other portions — such as sleeve or finishing details — make use of circular and double-pointed needle techniques.
- Lace patterning: The signature Lace Rib stitch runs throughout the body and sleeves, creating a rhythmic, openwork texture that is both visually striking and pleasingly tactile.
Materials for the Cardigan
The cardigan is knitted in Berroco Pima Soft, a DK weight yarn sold in 50-gram balls, in colorway #4609 Fossil. Depending on size, the cardigan requires between 9 and 17 balls. Needles required include a 32-inch / 80 cm circular needle in both size 4 / 3.5 mm and size 6 / 4 mm, as well as one set of double-pointed needles in size 6 / 4 mm. Additional notions include 2 stitch markers and waste yarn for holding stitches.
The Tank
The Filigree Tank is a sleeveless, fitted companion piece to the cardigan, designed to be worn alone or layered beneath the open-front cardigan for a cohesive, coordinated look. It shares the same Lace Rib stitch pattern, creating a harmonious set when the two garments are worn together.
Sizing and Fit
The tank is available in ten sizes, with a finished bust measurement ranging from 32 to 68 inches / 81.5 to 172.5 cm. Like the cardigan, it is designed with a recommended 2–4 inches / 5–10 cm of positive ease. The sample shown is knitted in size 36 inches / 91.5 cm. Finished lengths range from approximately 19½ to 23 inches / 49.5 to 58.5 cm.
