What you'll need

Product Description

Living somewhere with little to no light pollution means I do see the sky lit up on cloudless nights, and now take a keener interest in astronomy. Orion is clearly visible in the winter months, and Bellatrix is the third brightest star in the constellation after Rigel and Betelgeuse.

This shawl was specifically designed to use two different skeins of sock/fingering yarn - you will not need a full skein of the main colour. It could be made using just one colour. The sample used 88 grammes (385 yards/352 m) of Artesano Definition Sock yarn (black) and a full skein (437 yds/400 m) of Violet Green Solemate (blue/black variegated).

The pattern is charted using StitchMastery and includes full written instructions.

This is a one-size shawl, although the last two rows of the edging lace pattern can be worked up to 6 times in total to make the most of any overweight CC skeins.

Stitches used: ssk, p2tog, yo, kfb, m1p, 2, 3 and 4 stitch simple cables

Bellatrix Knit Shawl by Helen Gipson

What is Being Made

Bellatrix is a one-size triangular knit shawl inspired by the third brightest star in the constellation Orion. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a sophisticated accessory measuring 42 inches wide by 20 inches deep before blocking, with the finished dimensions expanding to 56 inches wide by 22.5 inches deep after blocking. The design celebrates celestial themes and is ideal for knitters seeking an intermediate-level project with visual interest and elegant proportions.

Pattern Design and Versatility

The Bellatrix shawl pattern is designed to use exactly two skeins of sock or fingering weight yarn, making it an efficient project with minimal yardage waste. The pattern accommodates two distinct color approaches: knitters may work the shawl in a single color throughout, or follow the sample's two-color construction using a main color paired with a coordinating contrast color. For those working with overweight contrast color skeins, the final two rows of the edging lace pattern can be repeated up to six times total, allowing flexibility in yarn quantities and creating additional depth to the finished piece.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate knitting project features lace patterning as a central design element. The shawl incorporates an edging lace pattern that forms the decorative border and contributes to the shawl's elegant drape and blocking behavior. The construction method allows for strategic color placement, with sections designated for contrast color (CC) and main color (MC) work, enabling knitters to create visual contrast and depth through thoughtful yarn placement.

Yarn and Materials

Bellatrix is worked in 4-ply sock or fingering weight yarn, requiring approximately 385 yards total across two skeins. The featured sample used 88 grammes of Artesano Definition Sock yarn in black paired with a full skein of Violet Green Solemate in blue and black variegated colorway. This yarn weight choice ensures excellent stitch definition for the lace patterns while creating a lightweight, versatile finished garment suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone accessory.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, Bellatrix suits knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace patterning and color work. The pattern's clear written instructions and logical construction make it accessible to those with prior knitting experience while offering sufficient technical challenge to maintain engagement throughout the project.
