Product Description
The Because Rainbow Mitts celebrate love- all love- and the beauty that is created when all forms of love are free to bloom. This pattern is meant to honor our queer youth as they search to find themselves and a place for their love in this world. It also honors our straight youth as they navigate allyship in the midst of adolescent turbulence. It recognizes and shows respect for those who are now grown and have experienced the challenges of youth through either of these lenses. To further this goal, 100% of the profits of the Because Rainbow pattern through August will be donated to @lamberthouse in Seattle Because Rainbow is a stranded mitt pattern that is great for stash busting. It contains charts for the two options shown above (on the left in the Rainbow Lite Mitts and on the right in the Double Rainbow Mitts)

Because Rainbow Mitts by SunDaughterKnits
Project Overview
The Because Rainbow Mitts are a pair of knitted gloves designed to celebrate love in all its forms. This downloadable PDF pattern honors queer youth discovering themselves and their place in the world, recognizes straight youth navigating allyship during adolescence, and pays respect to those who have experienced these journeys. The mitts serve as both a meaningful creative project and an effective stash-busting opportunity for knitters with leftover yarn.
What Is Being Made
This pattern provides instructions for creating a pair of mitts—hand coverings that typically extend partway up the forearm. The pattern includes charts for two distinct design options: the Rainbow Lite Mitts and the Double Rainbow Mitts, allowing knitters to choose their preferred colorwork intensity and visual impact.
Knitting Techniques
The Because Rainbow Mitts employ stranded colorwork knitting, a technique in which multiple colors of yarn are carried across the back of the work to create patterned designs on the front. Stranded colorwork is ideal for creating intricate, multi-colored motifs while maintaining structural integrity. This method requires managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously, making it well-suited for intermediate-level knitters who have experience with basic colorwork techniques.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes charted stitch patterns to guide the colorwork design. Knitters follow provided charts to determine when to switch between colors, creating the rainbow-themed patterns that define each mitt option. The structured chart-based approach ensures consistent, repeatable results across both mitts.
Yarn and Materials
The Because Rainbow Mitts are worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight option that creates refined, detailed fabric ideal for displaying colorwork patterns. This yarn weight is perfect for stash busting, as knitters can incorporate multiple colors and yarn remnants from previous projects. Appropriate knitting needles for 4-ply yarn are required to achieve proper gauge and fabric density.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Because Rainbow Mitts are designed for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their abilities. The stranded colorwork technique requires comfort with managing multiple colors and reading charts, making this pattern an excellent stepping stone for those advancing beyond basic knitting projects.
