Beaded Wristlets in Caron Simply Soft Party – Knitting Pattern by Marilyn Losee

The Beaded Wristlets, designed by Marilyn Losee, are a pair of fingerless gloves — sometimes called glovelet wristlets — that keep hands warm during colder months while leaving fingers completely free. Whether you are texting, cooking, playing guitar, or knitting, these wristlets offer cozy coverage without sacrificing dexterity. This is a free, downloadable PDF pattern rated for beginner knitters, making it an accessible introduction to working with beads in a knitting project.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a matched pair of fingerless wristlets — a left and a right — each measuring approximately 7 inches (18 cm) in circumference and 8 inches (20.5 cm) in length. Each wristlet is worked flat on two straight needles and then seamed, with thumb stitches added on each side to create a comfortable thumb gusset. The finished accessories sit at the wrist and lower hand, providing warmth without covering the fingers.

Materials Used

  • Yarn: Caron Simply Soft Party, an aran-weight yarn, in the colorway Black Sparkle (0007). Each skein contains 150 m / 164 yards (85 g / 3 oz), and one skein is sufficient for the project. The built-in sparkle of Simply Soft Party adds a decorative shimmer that complements the beaded detailing beautifully.
  • Needles: One pair each of U.S. size 6 (4 mm) and U.S. size 7 (4.5 mm) straight needles, or the size needed to achieve gauge.
  • Notions: 4 stitch markers, 32 seed beads (#3 size) — 16 per wristlet — and a dental floss threader or beading needle for pre-stringing the beads onto the yarn before casting on.

Gauge

Working in stockinette stitch on the larger U.S. size 7 (4.5 mm) needles, the gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches (10 cm). Achieving correct gauge is important for ensuring the wristlets fit the stated measurements.

Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting on two straight needles — the wristlets are worked back and forth in rows rather than in the round, then seamed to finish.
  • Thumb gusset shaping — stitches are increased on each side of the fabric over several rows using a knit-front-and-back (k1-f/b) increase, building a gusset that accommodates the thumb comfortably.
  • Bead knitting — beads are pre-strung onto the yarn before casting on using a dental floss threader. During knitting, individual beads are slid into position on the fabric to create a decorative bead pattern worked over a marked 5-stitch section. The beads must be large enough to thread the yarn through, making bead selection an important step.
  • Ribbing — a k1, p1 rib worked over 12 rows on the smaller needles forms the cuff, providing a snug, stretchy edge.
  • Stitch marker placement and slipping — markers are placed to frame the bead pattern section and the thumb gusset increases, keeping the pattern organized throughout.
  • Seaming — once knitting is complete, the thumb stitches are joined by a seam to close the wristlet into its final tubular shape.
  • Needle sizing change — the pattern intentionally uses two needle sizes: smaller needles for the ribbed cuff and larger needles for the body, a common technique to balance stretch at the cuff with a looser, more comfortable fabric on the hand.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (St st) — the main body fabric, created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows, producing a smooth, classic surface that showcases the beads and sparkle yarn.
  • K1
