Basic 10" Doll Plus 8 Dresses by Rosie's Design Store

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern from Rosie's Design Store provides instructions for creating a basic 25 centimetre (10 inch) doll along with eight coordinating dresses. The pattern is designed as an intermediate-level knitting project, making it suitable for crafters with some foundational knitting experience who are ready to progress beyond beginner techniques.

Knitting Techniques and Methods

The doll construction employs fundamental knitting techniques that create a three-dimensional stuffed toy. The pattern utilizes stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which is created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, uniform fabric surface. This classic technique is ideal for doll bodies as it creates an even appearance suitable for toy construction.

Shaping techniques are incorporated throughout the pattern, including increases (inc) worked by knitting into both the front and back of a single stitch, and make one stitches (m1) created by picking up the loop between stitches and knitting into the back of it. These increases allow the knitter to expand stitch counts gradually for shaping the doll's body and features.

The pattern employs a double-ended needle technique to facilitate arm attachment, ensuring secure and professional-looking joints between the limbs and body. Finishing work includes darning and sewing up seams with a darning needle to close the knitted pieces and attach components together before stuffing.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch that forms the base of the fabric
  • Purl (p) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used in alternating rows to create stocking stitch
  • Stocking stitch (st st) – the primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows
  • Increase by working into front and back (inc) – adds stitches for shaping
  • Make one stitch (m1) – creates new stitches between existing stitches for seamless increases

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The doll pattern requires 90 grams of skin-coloured yarn in double knitting weight (also referred to as 8 ply or light worsted). Double knitting yarn is a medium-weight yarn that knits to a standard gauge, making it ideal for creating doll bodies with good stitch definition and appropriate drape for clothing.

The project calls for two 3.25mm (US size 3) knitting needles as the primary tools, along with a double-ended needle to assist with arm attachment and secure joint construction. A darning needle is essential for sewing seams, attaching limbs, and weaving in yarn ends for a polished finish.

Toy filling (polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material) is required to fill the knitted doll body, creating a soft, three-dimensional form. The pattern includes eight dress designs that can be knitted using coordinating or contrasting yarns to create a complete doll wardrobe.

Pattern Structure and Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations throughout: beg (beginning), cm (centimetres), cont (continue), rem (remaining), rep (repeat), sts (stitches), and tog (together). These abbreviations are typical in knitting patterns and help condense instructions while maintaining clarity for experienced knitters.

Haven't tied the dresses yet but the doll was very straight forward and just a smaller version of the 13 inch doll.
