Product Description
A cute little owl to knit for your teapot. Quick to make from 8 ply and “feathers” type yarns.
This one is made to look like a barn owl, with his white and brown speckled front and his white face. Use any DK yarn you wish: you can alter the colours for your chosen species of owl, but keep the tension/gauge the same if using different yarns. You can also change his face by using different eyes.
Barn Owl Tea Cosy by Rian Anderson
What is Being Made
The Barn Owl Tea Cosy is a knitted tea cosy designed to fit a standard 6-8 cup teapot. This decorative and functional accessory measures approximately 48 cm all around at the widest part with a height of 21 cm. The cosy features a spout opening of 8-9 cm and a handle opening of 10-12 cm, making it compatible with teapots measuring approximately 15 cm in diameter and 12-15 cm in height from base to lid. The design is themed after a barn owl, with color work and textured elements that represent the distinctive features of this species.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The tea cosy is constructed using flat knitting techniques worked on needles, then assembled to create a fitted covering for a teapot. The design incorporates color work to create the barn owl pattern and texture, making it an intermediate-level project suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple colors and techniques.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The primary stitch structure is stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric ideal for displaying color work and texture. The pattern incorporates specialty yarn techniques, including the use of feathered yarn to add dimensional texture that mimics owl feathers. The color work elements represent the barn owl's characteristic markings, with contrasting colors creating the visual details of the bird's face and body.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
- Yarn Weight: DK weight (8 ply) yarn is used throughout the project
- Fawn/Medium Brown 8 ply yarn: 50 grams for the primary color base
- White/Ivory 8 ply yarn: 30 grams for contrast and detail work
- Feathered Yarn: 50 grams of specialty feathers-type yarn (such as Patons "Feathers" or Moda Vera "Flurry") in brown/cream mix or brown/grey mix to create textured feather effects
- Golden Brown 8 ply yarn: 5 grams optional for the beak detail
- Needles: 5.5 mm (US 9) needles
- Yarn Doubling: The 8 ply yarn is used doubled when working on 5.5 mm needles
Tension and Gauge
The required tension is 15 stitches and 21 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch when working with doubled 8 ply yarn on 5.5 mm (US 9) needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for obtaining accurate measurements. Knitters are instructed to work a tension swatch that is 4 stitches and 4 rows larger than the required tension and measure the central 10 cm to verify gauge before beginning the project.
Design Customization
While the Barn Owl Tea Cosy is specifically designed to represent a barn owl through its color palette and yarn choices, the pattern encourages customization. Knitters may alter the colors and yarns to represent different owl species while maintaining the same tension and gauge to ensure proper fit. This flexibility allows crafters to create personalized versions featuring their preferred owl varieties.
