Product Description
Simple Chunky Beanie, with two designs.
Knitted in a chunky yarn which had a mix of wool and acrylic however most chunky / bulky yarns should be suitable. Please also see tension/gauge section. A mixture of knit and purl stitches creates a sloping pattern which resembles sheafs of barley.
The pattern is written in full in English with step-by-step photos with both British and American terms throughout.
This hat is knitted flat and joined together, so no knitting on a round! The edge stitches help the seam to become hidden in the pattern once joined.
You only need to know basic stitches (knit, purl), and I will help with explaining a variation of these stitches to let you create this slouchy beanie. There may be an instruction you haven't done before but I have fully explained these in words with photos.
Barley Beanie by anrol
What is Being Made
The Barley Beanie is a chunky knit hat designed by Lorna Robson of anrol. This adult-sized beanie features a distinctive slouchy silhouette with a textured pattern that visually resembles sheafs of barley. The design is offered in two different style variations, both created using the same fundamental construction method and basic knitting techniques.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern is specifically designed for beginner knitters and requires knowledge of only basic knitting stitches. The Barley Beanie is knitted flat rather than in the round, which eliminates the need for circular needles or double-pointed needles. Once the flat pieces are completed, they are joined together to form the finished hat. The pattern includes step-by-step photographic guidance throughout, making it accessible for those new to knitting.
The construction method incorporates edge stitches that help create a hidden seam once the pieces are joined together, resulting in a professional-looking finish. The pattern is written in full English with both British and American knitting terminology provided, ensuring clarity regardless of which terminology system you use.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch - the fundamental stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl stitch - combined with knit stitches to create texture
- Stitch variations - the pattern includes instructions for variations of basic stitches that may be new to beginners, with detailed explanations provided in both written and photographic format
The combination of knit and purl stitches creates the characteristic sloping pattern that gives the beanie its barley-inspired texture and visual interest.
Materials
The Barley Beanie is worked in chunky or bulky weight yarn. The original design uses a yarn blend of wool and acrylic; however, most chunky and bulky weight yarns are suitable for this project. The pattern includes a tension and gauge section to help you select appropriate yarn and needles for your specific yarn choice. Knitting needles appropriate for chunky weight yarn are required, though the specific needle size will depend on your yarn selection and desired gauge.
Pattern Details
The Barley Beanie is offered as a downloadable PDF pattern with one size fitting most adults. The pattern is rated as Easy difficulty level, making it an excellent project for beginners or those looking for a quick, straightforward knit. The complete pattern includes detailed step-by-step photography to guide you through each stage of construction.
