Product Description

It seems only fitting that we should begin our exploration of themes from The Two Towers with a piece designed to represent one of those towers.

Barad Dur is a quick little shawlette, knit from the bottom or outside up & inward, decreasing as you go. The patterning is only on the outer edges, so once you have worked through the chart or directions for that portion, it is an easy stretch of stockinette until bind off.

Pattern's lace motif features the Eye of Sauron.

Barad Dur Knitted Shawl

About This Design

Barad Dur is an advanced knitting pattern from the Two Towers Series by designer Susan Pandorf, created through Sunflower Designs. This shawl draws inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, specifically referencing Barad-dûr, the fortress of Sauron located in the heart of Mordor. The design captures the essence of this iconic dark tower through its knitted construction, making it an ideal project for experienced knitters seeking a thematic and technically challenging creation.

Shawl Specifications

This knitted shawl measures 54 inches wide by 20 inches long at the center back, providing a generous triangular or crescent-shaped garment suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece. The finished dimensions make this an elegant accessory that offers substantial coverage while maintaining the delicate drape characteristic of sport and fingering weight yarns.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: 415 yards of sport or fingering weight yarn (4-ply); Rowan Panama is the recommended fiber, though any yarn of equivalent weight and yardage will work
  • Needles: US size 5 needles, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge
  • Gauge: 5 stitches equals 1 inch in stockinette stitch when blocked

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This advanced pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary stitch structure, which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that forms the foundation of the shawl. The gauge of 5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch, when properly blocked, ensures the shawl achieves its intended dimensions and drape. Advanced knitters will appreciate the technical challenges this pattern presents, requiring careful attention to stitch counts, shaping techniques, and the blocking process to achieve the finished measurements and aesthetic qualities that honor the Barad Dur theme.

Skill Level

Rated as an advanced difficulty pattern, this design is best suited for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills in shaping, gauge management, and finishing techniques. The complexity of the pattern and the precision required to achieve the specified finished dimensions make this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their technical repertoire.
