Product Description
This cardigan is knitted from side to side, commencing at sleeve. A very easy pattern that would be appropriate for both boys and girls so you can get knitting before the baby’s gender is known. The garter stitch creates a comfy, stretchy fabric that makes sizing more flexible so it can be worn for more than just a few weeks. The striping sequence is just enough to be interesting. This project works up quickly and does not require constant attention. Very little sewing involved. Comes with picture schematic showing how this garment is constructed.

Baby Sideways Knit Cardigan with Stripe Pattern
What is Being Made
This is a baby cardigan designed by OGE Knitwear Designs, created using a sideways knitting construction method with an integrated stripe pattern. The pattern is available in four sizes ranging from newborn through 9-12 months, with finished lengths from approximately 21cm (8¼ inches) for newborn up to 30cm (12 inches) for the largest size. The sideways construction technique allows the stripes to run horizontally across the body of the garment, creating a distinctive visual design element while offering practical advantages in garment construction and fit.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques fundamental to garment construction. The sideways knit method is the primary construction approach, meaning the cardigan is knitted from side to side rather than from bottom to top, which influences how increases, decreases, and shaping are worked. The pattern incorporates stocking stitch as the main fabric structure, creating a smooth, classic knit surface. Garter stitch is also utilized, likely for edgings or textural contrast. The stripe pattern is integrated throughout the design, requiring color changes and careful stitch management to maintain pattern continuity.
Shaping techniques include strategic increases and decreases to form the cardigan's silhouette and sleeve cap. The pattern uses the make one (m1) stitch method for increases, which involves picking up the loop lying between stitches and working into the back of the stitch to create a new stitch with minimal visibility. Decreases are achieved through standard methods including pass slip stitch over (psso) reductions. Sleeve length options are provided at 12cm (4¾ inches), 15cm (6 inches), 18cm (7 inches), and 21cm (8¼ inches) to accommodate different baby sizes and growth stages.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k): The fundamental knit stitch, worked throughout the stocking stitch sections
- Purl (p): Used in alternating rows to create stocking stitch fabric
- Garter stitch (g st): Created by knitting every row, used for textured sections or edgings
- Stocking stitch (st st): The primary fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows, producing a smooth, classic appearance
- Make one (m1): An invisible increase method that picks up the loop between stitches and works into the back loop
- Slip stitch (sl): A stitch slipped from one needle to another without working it, used in shaping and decreases
- Pass slip stitch over (psso): A decrease method where a slipped stitch is passed over a knit stitch to reduce stitch count
- Yarn overs (wyrn/yfw): Stitches created by winding yarn around the needle or bringing yarn forward, potentially used for texture or lace elements
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply baby wool yarn, classified as FINE #2 Sport weight yarn. The yarn requirements vary by size: the newborn size requires 1 ball of 50 grams, while sizes 3-6 months and 6-9 months each require 2 balls of 50 grams, and the 9-12 month size requires 3 balls of 50 grams. The pattern incorporates contrast colors, with 1 ball each of two contrast colors needed across all sizes, allowing for creative color combinations while maintaining the stripe pattern throughout the cardigan.
The pattern specifies needle sizes in metric, UK, and US measurements for compatibility with knitters worldwide. The primary needles are 2.00mm (UK size 14, US size 0) and 2.25mm (UK size 13, US size 1), appropriate for working with fine 4-ply baby yarn to create a fabric with good stitch definition and durability suitable for baby garments. The fine gauge and lightweight yarn ensure the finished cardigan will be soft, breathable, and comfortable for delicate baby skin while maintaining structural integrity through repeated wear and washing.
