Review of Knitting Patterns for dolls
Very easy pattern to follow and dress was lovely when completed. Granddaughter was delighted with her doll's dress. Thank you to the designer as the dress was a perfect fit.
The pattern is for a 14" Baby Doll. It includes a basic sweater dress which is worked in one piece to the armholes in stocking stitch for the skirt and rib pattern for the bodice. There is a back opening for easy fit. The sleeves are in stocking stitch throughout, with a basic ‘set in design’.
The tights or leggings are in stocking stitch with short rows to shape the heel and back. As Annabell is a ‘sitting down’ doll a lot of shaping is required for a good fit for the back of the tights. However, if your doll is not a ‘sitting down’ type which doesn’t need so much shaping, I have added instructions at the end of the body
This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Linmary Knits creates a Baby Annabell sweater dress with coordinating tights and leggings. The design is specifically engineered for dolls, featuring a fitted bodice and flowing skirt silhouette. The dress includes practical design elements such as a back opening for easy dressing of the doll, functional pockets, and set-in sleeves that provide a polished, tailored appearance.
The sweater dress is worked primarily in one piece, which streamlines the knitting process and reduces finishing work. The construction method divides the garment into distinct sections: the skirt is knitted first in the round to the armhole shaping, then transitions to flat rows for armhole shaping and bodice development. This hybrid approach—combining circular and flat knitting—allows for efficient construction while maintaining shaping control where needed. The sleeves are also worked in the round using a classic set-in sleeve design, which creates a professional fit at the shoulder and armhole.
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The skirt section features stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic stockinette fabric ideal for a flowing doll dress. The bodice incorporates rib pattern, which provides structure, elasticity, and visual interest at the upper garment. The sleeves are worked entirely in stocking stitch for continuity with the skirt. These stitch choices create natural color-work opportunities, as the smooth stockinette surface showcases stripe patterns and contrasting colors effectively.
The pattern is highly adaptable to different color schemes and offers multiple styling options. One example features a grey and white striped skirt and sleeves created with 2-row stripes in alternating colors, with a plain grey bodice and contrasting color accents on the hem, neckline, and pockets. An alternative colorway shows a plain skirt with a pink and white striped bodice (2 rows each), grey contrast at the hems, and pockets that coordinate with the bodice pattern. The pattern notes that these designs work equally well in solid, single-color knitting, giving crafters complete creative control over the final appearance.
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn that creates delicate, detailed fabric appropriate for doll-sized garments. The 4-ply weight allows for precise stitch definition and smooth color transitions in striped sections. Standard knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn are used throughout the project. The pattern accommodates multiple yarn colors for striped and contrasting effects, making it suitable for using yarn scraps or coordinating colors from a stash.
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable with fundamental shaping techniques. The intermediate classification reflects the combination of skills required: working in the round, transitioning between circular and flat knitting, managing armhole and sleeve shaping, and executing set-in sleeve construction. While not a beginner project, the pattern remains accessible to knitters with some experience who are ready to expand their technical repertoire.
