Product Description

This baby shoe is a very simple knit. It is knitted on two needles, and in one-piece, with just one short seam to sew up. You can knit it in any doubleknit wool.

I don't think you will be able to knit just one pair of shoes. They are a bit compulsive. They would make a really charming gift for any baby.

The pattern comes in two sizes, 0-3 months, and 3-6 months. Instructions for both these sizes are in this one pattern, but written out separately, as I find patterns with brackets a bit confusing.

Some of the shoes in my samples are decorated with wool embroidery. It is fun to make your shoes unique, but I also think they look cute plain.

You will need approx 14g of wool for a pair of the small shoes, and 20g for the larger ones.

Baby Button Shoes by Ginny Sturdy

Project Overview

Baby Button Shoes are knitted booties designed for newborns and young infants. This downloadable knitting pattern by independent designer Ginny Sturdy provides instructions for creating a pair of structured, fitted shoes with decorative button closures. The pattern includes sizing for two age ranges: 0-3 months with a finished length of 9 cm, and 3-6 months with a finished length of 10.5 cm.

Craft and Construction Method

These booties are created using the knitting technique, classified as an intermediate difficulty project. The construction method employs a tight knit approach, which creates a dense weave and provides enhanced structure compared to looser knitting styles. This technique is particularly important for baby shoes, as it ensures durability and maintains the shoe shape during wear.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Wool Doubleknit (DK weight). For the 0-3 months size, approximately 14 grams of yarn is needed. For the 3-6 months size, approximately 20 grams of yarn is required.
  • Needles: Size 2.5 mm needles are used throughout the pattern
  • Notions: 2 small buttons for decorative closures

Stitches and Techniques

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and increases to shape the bootie structure:

  • Kfb (Knit Front and Back): An increase stitch that creates two stitches from one, used strategically throughout the pattern to expand the fabric and shape the shoe
  • K2tog (Knit Two Together): A decrease stitch that combines two stitches into one
  • Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, forming the foundation of the bootie

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins with a cast-on of 40 stitches for the 0-3 months size. The first row is worked through the back of the stitch to create a finished edge. Subsequent rows employ strategic increases using the Kfb technique, building stitch count progressively to shape the foot bed and sides of the shoe. The increases are placed symmetrically to ensure even shaping and proper fit around the infant's foot.

Why This Pattern Works for Baby Shoes

The combination of DK weight yarn with 2.5 mm needles creates a notably tight gauge, which is essential for baby footwear. This tight weave prevents stretching and maintains structural integrity, ensuring the shoes hold their shape and provide proper support for developing feet. The button closures add both functional adjustability and charming aesthetic detail to these practical booties.
