Product Description
These newborn baby booties are made in one piece (except for the drawstring at the top), so there is no seaming required. They are made from the sole to to top edge with sport weight yarn: 45 yards of the main color for the booties and 5 yards of the contrasting color for the drawstrings. These booties can easily be made with a larger hook and heavier yarn to make them in a larger size for older babies.
I hope you enjoy this free baby bootie pattern. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Baby Booties by Susan Lowman
What Is Being Made
These baby booties are a pair of small, wearable crocheted shoes designed for infants. Each bootie measures approximately 3 inches long, making them an ideal size for newborns and young babies. The pattern includes instructions for creating two matching booties using a combination of main color and contrasting color yarn for visual interest and detail.
Craft and Primary Technique
Baby Booties are created using the crochet technique, a fiber craft that uses a single hook to form loops and interlocking stitches from yarn. Crochet is an accessible craft for beginners, and this pattern is specifically designed at an easy skill level, making it suitable for those new to crochet or looking for a quick, satisfying project. The straightforward construction method allows crafters to complete wearable items with minimal experience.
Stitches Used
This pattern employs several fundamental crochet stitches to build the bootie structure:
- Chain stitch (ch) – The foundation stitch used to create the initial base of the sole
- Single crochet (sc) – A short, tight stitch that provides structure and density
- Half double crochet (hdc) – A medium-height stitch used throughout the pattern for efficient fabric building
- Half double crochet decrease (hdc dec) – A special technique that combines two stitches into one, used to shape and reduce stitches as needed for the bootie's contoured fit
- Double crochet (dc) – A taller stitch that may be incorporated for specific sections
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between sections
Materials and Tools
The Baby Booties pattern calls for sport weight acrylic yarn, a lightweight yarn category ideal for delicate baby items. You will need approximately 45 yards of main color yarn and 5 yards of contrasting color yarn to complete both booties. A Size G (4 mm) crochet hook is recommended, though the pattern notes that you may use a different size if needed to achieve the correct gauge. The gauge specification for rounds 1–3 is 3 inches long by 1¼ inches wide, ensuring the booties reach the proper finished dimensions.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized using standard crochet abbreviations and notation. Work is constructed in rounds (rnds), building the bootie from the sole upward. The pattern uses bracket notation [ ] to indicate sections that should be repeated a specified number of times, streamlining instructions and making the pattern easier to follow. Each bootie is made individually, with the pattern providing complete directions for creating a matching pair.
