Gauge: It's especially important to make a gauge swatch for this pattern. Crochet a large swatch (4–6” square) at the gauge you'd prefer for the yarn. Most yarn has a recommended gauge on its tag, which is a useful guideline. Wash and block the swatch the same way you'll wash the jumper. Measure how many stitches and rows you have in 4” (this helps accommodate for an uneven gauge), then divide by 4 to figure out how many stitches and rows you have per inch.
In order to be crocheted at any gauge, directions are given in inches instead of a stitch count. So if the directions say to chain 20” worth of stitches for your size, and your gauge is 4 sts to the inch, you'll chain 80 sts.

B10 Basic Crochet Pullover – A Versatile Women's Jumper Pattern by Sara Delaney
The B10 Basic Crocheted Pullover is a women's crochet jumper pattern designed by Sara Delaney and worked in Valley Yarns Northfield, a luxurious blend of 70% Merino wool, 20% Baby Alpaca, and 10% Silk. This pattern is a beautifully practical design that prioritises versatility, making it an ideal choice for crocheters who want a foundational pullover they can adapt to different yarns, gauges, stitch patterns, and personal style preferences. The sample garment was crocheted in color #24 Stone Blue using 14 skeins of Valley Yarns Northfield (124 yards per 50g skein).
Garment Overview and Sizing
This pattern produces a classic, relaxed-fit pullover jumper with a clean silhouette suited to everyday wear. Finished bust sizes range from 36 to 52 inches, offered in five sizes: 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches, with the sample shown in the 36-inch size. The generous size range makes this pattern accessible to a wide variety of body types, and the inch-based instructions (rather than stitch counts) make it straightforward to customise the fit further.
One of the standout features of this design is its multiple neckline options, giving crocheters the freedom to personalise the finished look. Whether you prefer a closer neckline or something more open, the pattern accommodates different preferences, making the B10 a true wardrobe staple that can be made again and again with a fresh result each time.
Construction Method
The B10 pullover is constructed using a bottom-up, worked flat, and seamed approach. This means each major section of the garment — the back, front, and sleeves — is crocheted as a flat panel from the lower hem upward, then the pieces are joined together using seaming techniques to create the finished three-dimensional garment. This method is particularly well-suited to crocheters who are comfortable working in rows and who appreciate the structure and stability that seaming provides. Flat construction also makes it easy to try the pieces against your body as you go, helping you achieve a precise fit.
The back panel begins with a foundation chain measuring 18 (20, 22, 24, 26) inches worth of stitches, rounded up to the nearest even number plus two. Working in rows of half double crochet, the back is worked straight until it reaches 15 inches, or a specified number of inches shorter than the desired total length, at which point stitch markers are placed at the left and right edges to mark the base of the armholes. This logical, measurement-driven approach removes much of the guesswork from garment construction.
Primary Stitch and Techniques Used
The primary stitch throughout this pullover is the half double crochet (hdc), a versatile and relatively quick stitch that produces a fabric with a pleasing drape and a subtle texture. Half double crochet sits between single and double crochet in height, creating a dense but not stiff fabric — ideal for a garment that needs to hold its shape while remaining comfortable to wear.
Additional stitches and techniques referenced in the pattern include:
- Half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog) – a decrease stitch used to shape the garment. It is worked by drawing up loops in two consecutive stitches and pulling through all loops together, creating a neat, angled decrease.
- Back loop single crochet (blsc) – single crochet worked through the back loop only, which creates a ridged, textural effect often used for ribbing or edging details.
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining and finishing purposes.
- Chain (ch) – used for the foundation and for turning chains throughout the flat rows.
- Locking ring stitch markers – recommended as a notions tool to mark key construction points such as the base of the armholes.
The pattern is explicitly designed to be easy to adapt to many different stitch patterns, meaning that experienced crocheters can substitute the half double crochet fabric for textured stitches, shells, or other pattern stitches of their choosing, as long as gauge is carefully matched.
