Product Description
This pattern is for a pair of ornately cabled socks. The cable itself is a Japanese cable that is just perfect for socks. There’s enough “give” to make them comfortable, but enough unusual cabling to make them interesting to look at and fun to knit.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of knitting and purling, lace knitting and cabling).
The cable stitch is both charted and written out line by line.
This pattern is written for 2 circular needles and is written for sizes Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, and is sized by gauge.
The sock pictured here was made with Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock yarn, in colorway, Grapevine.
Any light weight fingering yarn will work with this pattern.
Avery's Cabled Socks by Linda Lehman
What Is Being Made
Avery's Cabled Socks is a knitted sock pattern designed by Linda Lehman featuring intricate cable work and Japanese ladder stitch detailing. These are wearable socks suitable for cool spring days and nights, available in multiple sizes from Small through Extra Large. The pattern is intended for knitters with intermediate skill levels who have foundational knowledge of basic knitting techniques.
Techniques Used
This sock pattern incorporates several advanced knitting techniques that distinguish it from basic sock patterns. Cable knitting forms the primary decorative element, with multiple cables running along the sock stitch. The design also features Japanese ladder stitch, a specialty technique that creates an openwork effect allowing improved breathability in the finished socks. The pattern employs circular needle knitting for seamless construction and includes finishing with the Kitchener Stitch for grafting the toe closure. Proper gauge adjustment across different sizes is essential, with specific stitch counts per inch provided for each size range.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – the primary base stitch used to establish gauge and form the main fabric
- Cable Stitches – multiple cable variations that create the decorative pattern adorning the sock
- Japanese Ladder Stitch – an openwork technique integrated into the design for breathability
- Knit and Purl Stitches – foundational stitches required for cable and pattern work
- Kitchener Stitch – used for grafting the toe closure seamlessly
Materials Required
Avery's Cabled Socks requires 390 to 475 yards of light weight fingering weight yarn (4-ply), with yardage varying by size. The pattern calls for two size 2.50mm circular needles for size Medium, though needle sizes adjust based on desired finished size: size 2.25mm for Small, and sizes 2.75mm or 3.00mm for Medium-Large through Extra Large. An optional 12-inch needle in size 2.50mm or US #1 or #2 is recommended for gauge swatching. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for executing the Kitchener Stitch finish. Gauge specifications range from 6½ stitches per inch for larger sizes to 9 stitches per inch for Small, all measured over stockinette stitch.
