Product Description

NOTE: I am hoping to release a wrap-style, larger scale version of this cowl done in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick yarn. Same stitch, similar name (Autumn Morning Wrap), totally different style.

This lovely cowl is full of rich colors and subtly changes between deep reds, blues, pinks, and greys. The stitch, Trellis Lace, is only compatible with knitting in the round. All of the knit stitches lean to the right because of the K2tog. Speaking of which, the techniques you need to know are really simple.

Knit two stitches together (K2tog)

Yarn over

Knitting in the round (easy-peasy!)

It makes an excellent introduction to lace knitting, and once you've completed the cowl, you'll be able to knit almost any lace pattern!

Autumn Morning Cowl by Lizzie Rose Knits

Project Overview

The Autumn Morning Cowl is a versatile knitted cowl designed by Lizzie Rose Knits, available as a free downloadable PDF pattern. This project offers knitters two size options to suit different preferences and styling needs, making it an accessible design for various skill levels.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a cozy knitted cowl, a circular neckwear accessory that drapes around the neck and shoulders. The Autumn Morning Cowl is offered in two distinct sizes: a single loop version measuring 32 inches by 10 inches, and a double loop version measuring 60 inches by 10 inches. The double loop option provides extra length for layering or wrapping around the neck multiple times for added warmth and coverage.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Autumn Morning Cowl employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create its finished structure. The pattern begins with a longtail cast on, a classic method that creates a flexible, neat edge ideal for circular projects. Knitters work in the round using a circular needle, which allows for seamless construction and continuous rows without seaming. The pattern incorporates garter stitch or ribbing for the borders, providing elasticity and structure at the top and bottom edges. The main body features an open lace pattern that requires blocking after completion to fully open up and display the delicate lace design, enhancing the cowl's drape and visual appeal.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Autumn Morning Cowl utilizes basic knitting stitches combined into a simple repeating lace pattern. The border sections employ either garter stitch (knit every round) or k1, p1 ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches), allowing knitters to choose their preferred edge finish. The main lace pattern is a two-round repeat: Round 1 features a yarn over and knit two together (YO, k2tog) repeat worked all the way around, creating the characteristic openwork of a trellis lace pattern. Round 2 consists of knitting all stitches, allowing the lace to develop evenly. This simple two-row repeat is worked repeatedly until the cowl reaches the desired length of 9.5 inches from the cast-on edge, after which the border pattern is repeated and the piece is bound off loosely.

Materials and Tools

The Autumn Morning Cowl is designed to be worked with aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits up quickly while maintaining good stitch definition. The pattern calls for one skein of Lion Brand Landscapes in the Harvest Moon5.5mm (US 9) 24-inch circular knitting needle to accommodate the cast-on stitches and work in the round. Additional tools required include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and a round marker to denote the beginning of each round. The gauge for this pattern is 3 stitches and 4 rows per 1 inch when worked in the trellis lace stitch.
