The scarf combines a very distinct cable combined with a highly textured stitch, which shows off the cable to its best advantage. Although the scarf is knitted with sport weight yarn, requiring between 600 and 800 yards, the turtleneck section will keep you warm even on the coldest of day. It is knit on a size #4 (U.S.) needle.
The stitches are both charted and written out.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a very good working knowledge of cabling .)
There are also instructions for an optional crocheted border, should you want it edged.
Ant sport weight yarn will work for this pattern. No crochet hooks are needed if you don't want to edge the scarf.
AuClair Cabled Scarf by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The AuClair Cabled Scarf is an intermediate-level knitting project designed to showcase cable work techniques while providing practical warmth. Despite being knitted with sport weight yarn, the inclusion of a turtleneck section ensures this scarf delivers insulation for cooler weather. This design appeals to knitters who enjoy working with cables and want to create a visually striking wearable that demonstrates technical skill.
What Is Being Made
This is a full-length scarf measuring 7 inches wide by 68 to 72 inches long, featuring a turtleneck section that provides additional coverage and warmth around the neck area. The scarf combines both twisted stitches and cabled stitches throughout its length, creating a textured, dimensional fabric with visual interest.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Cable work: The scarf involves several fairly intricate cables that form the primary design element and require the use of a cable needle to create crossed stitches
- Twisted stitches: In addition to cables, twisted stitches are incorporated to add complexity and unique texture to the finished piece
- Basic knitting fundamentals: The pattern assumes competency with knit and purl stitches as foundational skills
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern utilizes standard knitting abbreviations including knit (k), purl (p), slip stitches (sl1), and through-the-back-loop (tbl) techniques. The primary focus is on cabled stitches and twisted stitches, which are worked using a cable needle to manipulate stitch placement and create the characteristic crossed, braided appearance of cable knitting.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The scarf requires 600 to 800 yards of sport weight yarn, which provides a lightweight yet warm fabric suitable for layering or wearing as a primary neck accessory.
Needles and Tools: Knitters will need U.S. size #5 needles, including one spare size #5 needle, plus one cable needle (CN) for manipulating cable stitches. A tapestry needle is required for finishing and weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge: The pattern notes that gauge is unimportant for this project, with a rough reference of 6½ stitches per inch in cable stitch. This flexibility makes the scarf forgiving for knitters whose tension varies slightly.
Optional Crocheted Edging
For knitters interested in adding a finished edge detail, the pattern includes an optional crocheted edging. This requires approximately 100 yards of the same yarn or a coordinating color, along with U.S. size F and G crochet hooks, allowing for customization and personalization of the final design.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project assumes knitters have basic knowledge of knitting, purling, and cabling techniques. The cable work requires focus and attention but is achievable for knitters who have progressed beyond beginner level and are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns.
