Product Description
Arete is an ankle sock, with a neat, turn-over, lace cuff and a Norwegian style heel.
The pattern gives the instructions for a two-colour version with contrasting cuffs, heels and toes as well as how to set up helical stripes if you fancied a bit more detail.
The test knitters used two 50g balls of both hand dyed and commercial sock yarns and all the results were stunning.
The sample helical pair to show how they would look with an additional colour and would require a 3rd 50g ball.

What Is Being Made
Arete is an ankle sock pattern inspired by the Homeric character Arete, Queen of the Phaeacians from Homer's The Odyssey. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a practical yet elegant sock featuring a distinctive turned-over lace cuff design, making it ideal for comfortable everyday wear or cozy fireside knitting projects.
Design Features
- Ankle-height sock construction
- Neat, turned-over lace cuff detail
- Two-colour version option with contrasting cuffs, heels, and toes
- Helical stripe variation available for additional visual interest
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern incorporates lace knitting techniques in the cuff section, creating an openwork design that provides both aesthetic appeal and practical stretch. The pattern includes instructions for managing colour changes across multiple sections of the sock, including the cuff, heel, and toe areas. Knitters can choose between a straightforward two-colour construction or advance to helical striping for a more complex, multi-coloured effect.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern description, the lace cuff indicates the use of decorative lace stitches combined with standard sock construction methods. The pattern provides clear setup instructions for both the two-colour and helical stripe variations, allowing knitters to customize their finished socks.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight. For the two-colour version, knitters will need two 50g balls of yarn in contrasting colours. The helical stripe variation requires an additional third 50g ball, bringing the total to three 50g balls for the most detailed colourwork version.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational sock-knitting experience who are ready to tackle lace elements and colour work.
