Product Description
The Arcone Cowl is a tall order of coziness. Created to keep both your neck and face warm, this cowl covers your ears and nose when extended. Squish it down for extra snuggly neck or add buttons for a folded option.
This cowl also only uses one ball of super bulky yarn! So it works up quick and doesn't cost much. I think I spent more on those buttons, ha! The Arcone Cowl is worked from the short end and grows in length, so if you want to add more balls of yarn to make a wide scarf or infinity cowl you can do that.
Personally I love how easy cowls are to wear. I don't have to worry about scarf tails tangling, tripping or dipping into things. With littles around a cowl is just a better option for busy moms. These make great gifts since they work up quick and can be made in a day.

What Is Being Made
The Arcone Cowl is a beginner-friendly crochet cowl designed by ChristaCoDesign. This finished accessory measures 24 inches by 11 inches, making it a versatile neck wrap suitable for layering and everyday wear. The cowl is worked flat and then seamed or closed with decorative buttons, offering a customizable finishing option for makers.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners while incorporating some intermediate shaping elements. The piece is worked flat in rows rather than in the round, which simplifies construction and makes it easier to track stitch counts and maintain even tension. The pattern uses a stitch multiple of 6 + 3, creating a repeating pattern structure that is both manageable and visually interesting. The cowl is finished by either seaming the edges together or using buttons as a closure method, allowing crafters to choose their preferred finishing technique.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The Arcone Cowl relies on basic crochet stitches that make it accessible to beginners:
- Chain stitch (ch) – The foundation stitch used to create the starting chain
- Double crochet (dc) – The primary stitch used throughout the body of the cowl
- Double crochet three together (Dc3tog) – A cluster stitch that decreases stitches and creates texture
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining and seaming
- Cluster stitch – Defined as (dc3tog + ch 2), adding decorative interest to the pattern
The pattern notes that ch 3 counts as a stitch, and the designer highly recommends using a ch 3 alternative for improved stitch definition and appearance.
Materials Required
The Arcone Cowl requires minimal materials, making it an economical project:
- Yarn: 106 yards of #6 super bulky weight yarn. The pattern specifies Lion Brand's Wool Ease Thick & Quick in Oatmeal (1 ball), though any super chunky weight yarn of comparable yardage can be substituted
- Hook: 9mm crochet hook
- Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming, measuring tape for checking dimensions, scissors, and buttons measuring 1.25 inches for closure
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 inches by 4 inches = 7 double crochets by 4 rows. Checking gauge before beginning ensures the finished cowl will meet the intended dimensions of 24 inches wide by 11 inches tall. Working with super bulky weight yarn and a 9mm hook creates a quick, satisfying project that works up rapidly.
Pattern Structure
The Arcone Cowl pattern begins with a foundation chain of 23 stitches. Row 1 establishes the base by working double crochets in the 4th chain and across, resulting in 21 stitches. The pattern continues in rows with a stitch multiple of 6 + 3, allowing the design to repeat consistently across the width while maintaining the proper stitch count for shaping and closure.
