Product Description

[Pattern Three from the Birthstone Shawl Collection][1]

The name “aquamarine” comes from the Latin words Aqua (water) and marina (the sea). It was believed that these gemstones would protect sailors and ensure a safe seafaring voyage. It was also recommended that Aquamarine be worn to promote calm, levelheaded temperments.

SHAPE: Scoop bottom / crescent

The main body of this design is worked in garter stitch. The border is then knit on sideways. No seaming involved! There are two choices of border – a celtic cable and a traveling lace version. The cable version uses more yarn than the lace. If you’re low on yardage, but want a larger shawl the lace variation is a better choice.

The instructions are written for two sizes, a small shawlette and a larger full size shawl. The shawlette uses a single (400 yard) skein of fingering weight yarn. The larger size requires 2 skeins. Want the larger size, but don’t have enough yardage of a single color? Experiment wit

Aquamarine Shawl by 1 More Row Designs

Design Overview

Aquamarine is an intermediate to advanced knitted shawl design from the Birthstone Collection by independent designer 1 More Row Designs. Inspired by the protective qualities historically attributed to aquamarine gemstones, this shawl combines a serene aesthetic with thoughtful construction. The design is available in two sizes: a compact shawlette and a larger full-size shawl, making it adaptable to different yarn quantities and personal preferences.

What is Being Made

This pattern produces a beautiful knitted shawl with a distinctive construction method. The shawlette version uses a single 400-yard skein of fingering weight yarn, while the full-size shawl requires 2 skeins. The design is versatile enough to accommodate color experimentation—knitters can combine different yarn colors between the main body and border sections to create unique colorway variations when working with limited yardage of a single color.

Knitting Techniques

The Aquamarine shawl employs a sideways border construction method that eliminates the need for seaming, streamlining the finishing process. This technique allows the border to be knit on independently after the main body is complete, offering flexibility in design choices and yarn management.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Garter Stitch: Forms the main body of the shawl, creating a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges
  • Celtic Cable Border: First border option featuring traditional cable stitch work for a more textured, decorative edge
  • Traveling Lace Border: Second border option featuring lace stitchwork, which uses less yardage than the cable version and is recommended when working with limited yarn quantities

Materials and Yarn Weight

The Aquamarine pattern is designed for 4-ply fingering weight yarn. The shawlette requires approximately 400 yards from a single skein, while the full-size shawl requires 2 skeins (approximately 800 yards total). Knitters working with 4-ply yarn will need appropriate needles sized to achieve the desired fabric drape and stitch definition for both the garter stitch body and the chosen border variation.

Pattern Features

  • Two size options accommodating different yarn quantities and preferences
  • Two distinct border choices allowing customization of final appearance and yardage requirements
  • Seam-free construction for simplified finishing
  • Intermediate to advanced skill level suitable for knitters with experience in stitch techniques and shaping
  • Opportunity for creative color blocking and yarn combination experimentation
