Product Description
This pullover is perfectly suited for making use of wool yarns left over from previous projects and experimenting with your own color combinations! I used a variety of rustic wools for the sample pictured here, including Jill Draper’s Mohonk(which is labeled a sport weight yarn) and Kingston (labeled a DK), as well as some of my hand-dyed fingering weight yarns held double.
You can choose to make your garment with two contrasting colors or several…or perhaps experiment with gradients and fades…FADIENTS! It’s up to you! (The sample sweater shown combines 8 different yarn colors.)
Mosaic patterns are included both as written instructions and in chart form.
Appledore Pullover by Heidi Reszies
What is Being Made
Appledore is a seamless pullover sweater named after an island in the Isles of Shoals archipelago located on the Maine and New Hampshire border in the Northeast United States. This knit garment features a distinctive mosaic colorwork yoke and is designed to be worn with positive ease and a deep yoke. The pullover is available in four sizes and is ideal for knitters seeking a beginner-friendly project that incorporates colorwork techniques.

- Top-down construction knit seamlessly on circular needles
- Mosaic colorwork yoke created using slip stitch motifs
- One color fiber studio yarn worked in a round at a time
- No yarn carrying or float catching required, simplifying the colorwork process
- Slightly fitted sleeves with ribbed cuffs
- Short row shaping in the back neckline for improved fit
- Adjustable sleeve and body length to customize the finished garment
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Appledore pullover employs mosaic colorwork as its primary decorative technique. Mosaic knitting uses slip stitch motifs worked with alternating colors, allowing knitters to create complex colorwork patterns without the traditional challenges of stranded colorwork. Since only one color is worked in each round, there is no need to carry multiple yarns or catch floats, making this an accessible introduction to colorwork for beginner knitters. The pattern also incorporates ribbed cuffs on the sleeves and short row shaping at the back neckline to enhance the fit and comfort of the finished sweater.
Materials
Appledore is designed to work with DK to worsted weight yarns, making it versatile for various yarn selections. The pattern is particularly well-suited for using wool yarn leftovers from previous projects, allowing knitters to create a multi-colored or scrappy version of this sweater. The garment is worked on circular needles throughout, which are essential for the seamless, top-down construction method.
