Apatite is a gemstone that looks similar to tourmaline in its blue green form and comes in yellow, green, pink, purple, violet, clear, and cat's eye. The yarn I used reminded me of minerals and this gemstone.

Apatite Socks by Sarah Mahan
What is Being Made
Apatite Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for hand-knitted socks designed by independent designer Sarah Mahan. The pattern creates a pair of adult socks available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The design is inspired by the gemstone apatite, which displays blue-green coloring similar to tourmaline, along with yellow, green, pink, purple, violet, clear, and cat's eye varieties. The pattern name reflects the mineral aesthetic that influenced the yarn selection and overall design concept.
Techniques and Construction
Apatite Socks employs a textured stitch pattern that creates visual interest while remaining meditative and easy to memorize once established. The pattern is specifically designed for knitters who want to work on their socks during casual settings—while watching television, attending knitting circles with friends, or during spare moments—without requiring constant pattern reference after the initial rows. The sock construction accommodates multiple sizing options through adjustments to stitch counts, particularly over the heel section, allowing the pattern to be modified to fit various foot dimensions beyond the three primary sizes.
Stitches Used
The Apatite pattern utilizes a multiple of 4 stitches for its textured repeat, making it highly versatile for different circumference adjustments. The pattern requires knitting in both stockinette stitch and the primary textured stitch pattern throughout the sock construction. The gauge specifications indicate 9 stitches equals 1 inch (2.5 cm) when working the pattern stitch, and 8-9 stitches equals 1 inch (2.5 cm) in stockinette, allowing knitters to adjust their tension accordingly based on which stitch they are working.
