What Is Being Made
The Anticipate pattern is a coordinated set consisting of a knitted hat and matching handwarmers (mittens), designed to be worked as a complementary pair. This is an ideal project for utilizing a special skein of sock yarn, as both pieces require only a small amount of lightweight yarn to complete. The set includes multiple size options for both the hat and handwarmers, allowing for customization to fit different head and hand circumferences.
Hat Details
The hat is available in four sizes: XS, S, M, and L, with finished brim measurements ranging from 12.5 inches to 17.25 inches when slightly stretched. The hat is designed to fit head circumferences of 18 to 24 inches. The construction is seamless and worked in the round, creating a smooth, professional finish without seaming.
Handwarmer Details
The handwarmers are offered in four sizes: XS, S, M, and L, designed to fit hand circumferences ranging from 6 to 9 inches. Like the hat, the handwarmers are constructed seamlessly in the round, ensuring comfort and a polished appearance. The sizing allows for a proper fit across various hand sizes.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Anticipate set employs a combination of fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible for intermediate-level knitters. The primary stitch pattern features simple stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. This is complemented by Rick-Rack Lace, an elegant lace pattern that adds visual interest and texture to the design.
Both the hat and handwarmers are worked seamlessly in the round, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous, tubular fabric. This method requires working with circular needles or double-pointed needles appropriate to the project's circumference. The combination of stockinette and lace stitches creates an intuitive knitting experience that is engaging without being overly complex.
Materials and Tools Required
For the Hat: US 2.5 / 3mm circular needles measuring 16 inches, along with stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping.
For the Handwarmers: US 4 / 3.5mm circular needles measuring 16 inches, or US 4 / 3.5mm double-pointed needles for knitting small circumferences in the round, plus stitch markers.
The pattern is designed for 3-ply yarn weight, making it perfect for lightweight sock yarn or similar fingering-weight yarns. The needle size differences between the hat and handwarmers allow for appropriate gauge and fabric drape for each component of the set.
