Product Description
I designed this tiny dress for Anna.
This tiny dress is designed to be knit flat. Usually, I specialize in one piece knitting with minimal seaming but I felt this dress needed the structure of two side seams.
The borders are moss stitch, this is done by casting on an odd number of stitches and beginning each row with k1,p1 repeating this to the end.
The triangles can be knit in several bright contrasting colours or just one. The triangles are constructed using short rows, just follow the pattern line by line!
Don’t panic over the w&t, Cat Bordhi explains wraps and turns, on youtube.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners while introducing slightly more advanced methods. The primary construction uses knit flat from side to side, a directional approach that changes the typical top-down or bottom-up building method. This technique creates interesting visual flow and demonstrates how garment shaping can be achieved through lateral construction.
The dress features moss stitch for its borders, a classic textured stitch created by casting on an odd number of stitches and alternating knit and purl stitches in a *k1, p1* pattern throughout each row. Moss stitch creates a dense, bumpy fabric that frames the dress beautifully and provides excellent stitch definition.
The pattern incorporates wrap and turn (w&t) techniques, which are essential short-row shaping methods used to create contoured sections without cutting the yarn. This technique allows knitters to work back and forth over a subset of stitches, building height and shaping in specific areas. The designer notes that Cat Bordhi provides excellent instructional resources for mastering wraps and turns, making this an accessible learning opportunity for beginners.
The triangular color sections mentioned in the pattern notes can be worked in multiple bright contrasting colors or a single accent color, offering creative flexibility and visual impact to the finished garment.
Yarn and Materials
This project requires DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight suitable for creating fabric with good drape and definition. The yardage requirements are 150 grams for the smallest size, increasing to 200 grams for larger sizes. An additional 100 grams of contrasting DK weight yarn is needed for the triangular design elements, allowing crafters to introduce color interest and visual complexity.
The pattern calls for 4mm circular or straight needles, giving knitters the flexibility to choose their preferred needle style. Circular needles are particularly useful for this side-to-side construction, though straight needles work equally well for flat knitting.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit in this infant garment. The pattern specifies 22 stitches to 4 inches (10 cm) and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) in the main fabric. Checking gauge before beginning ensures the finished dress will fit correctly across the four size options.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with casting on 49, 59, 71, or 83 stitches depending on the chosen size. The front section is worked first, with moss stitch borders framing a central stockinette section. The structured approach and clear abbreviations (k for knit, p for purl, st/sts for stitch/stitches) make this pattern accessible for knitters building their foundational skills.
Design Notes
This dress was originally designed for a child named Anna and reflects thoughtful construction choices for tiny garments. The combination of moss stitch borders with contrasting triangular sections creates visual interest while maintaining beginner-appropriate complexity. The side-to-side construction method offers a fresh approach to garment building and provides valuable experience with directional knitting techniques.
