Product Description
This third installment in the Night at the Movies Sock Club is inspired by West Side Story.
I adore the choreography of The Gangs Fight in the Street from West Side Story and the musical score for this film.
The pattern is named after Rita Moreno’s character Anita, who I learned spoke up against lyrics in songs that she was supposed to sing because they were discriminating and the writers changed the lyrics because of her amazing ability to stand up for herself and what was right. I have so much admiration for women who bust barriers like that.
Worked in the round, Anita contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.
Anita Socks by rhyFlower Knits
What Is Being Made
Anita is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed by rhyFlower Knits. This intermediate-level project creates fitted socks with decorative cable details, available in six different sizes ranging from 6.5 inches to 9 inches in circumference around the ball of the foot. The pattern offers flexibility in construction method, with testers successfully completing the design using the toe-up approach.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Anita sock pattern incorporates cable knitting as its primary decorative technique. Cable work is an intermediate skill that involves crossing groups of stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like textures. According to the pattern notes, the cables in this design pull the fabric relatively tightly, which may require knitters to adjust their typical stitch counts upward by one or two sizes to achieve proper fit and comfort. Some testers found success knitting different stitch counts for the leg versus the foot section, increasing or decreasing stitches strategically at the heel placement to customize the fit.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The pattern employs specialized cable stitches to create its textured design. Key stitches used include:
- 2/1 LC (Left Cable): Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold at the front of work, knit 1 stitch from the main needle, then knit 2 stitches from the cable needle
- 2/1 LPC (Left Purl Cable): Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold at the front of work, then purl the next stitch before working the stitches from the cable needle
These cable abbreviations indicate a sophisticated stitch pattern that combines knit and purl elements to create dimensional texture throughout the sock leg and foot.
Materials and Gauge
Anita is designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, which provides durability and a refined finished appearance suitable for everyday wear. The pattern recommends US1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches in length, or whatever needle size is necessary to achieve the correct gauge as specified in the pattern. Circular needles of this length allow for the magic loop method or two-circular-needle technique commonly used in sock knitting. Knitters should verify their gauge before beginning to ensure proper fit, particularly given the snug nature of the cable stitches.
Pattern Specifications
The sample photographed in the pattern was created using the toe-up construction method on 60 stitches. This approach allows knitters to try on the sock as they progress and adjust length to personal preference. The pattern provides six finished size options with corresponding stitch counts, accommodating a range of foot sizes and allowing customization based on individual gauge and tension preferences.
