Product Description

Angeline is a cloche hat. It uses fingering yarn held double and three colours to create a gradual tonal change and a contrast colour on the final row of the brim.

This is a great project for leftover sock yarn or mini skeins.

The contrast colour is also used for three rows of slip stitch around the band. Three crochet buttons are used as decoration on the right-hand side of the hat.

This is a top-down construction worked in the round. The crown of the hat is all treble crochet (US double crochet), with half trebles (US half db) and doubles (US crochet stitch) also used in the brim. The last row of the brim is worked in the contrast colour.

Slip stich is used to create a ‘top stich’ effect and three stripes around the band. The central strip uses the yarn held double and the other two use a single yarn. There are three crochet buttons in two sizes and colours sewn over the right side of the hat.

Angeline Cloche Hat by Hannah Smith

What is Being Made

Angeline is a vintage-inspired cloche hat designed by Hannah Smith. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a fitted, close-fitting hat with a structured crown and a brim that extends slightly over the ears. The cloche style is achieved through top-down construction worked in the round, resulting in a classic, elegant silhouette suitable for intermediate crocheters.

Construction Method

The hat is constructed using a top-down approach worked in the round, beginning at the crown and progressing downward to the brim. This method allows for seamless shaping and even tension throughout the piece. The construction technique creates a smooth, unified fabric without visible seams at the crown.

Crochet Stitches Used

  • Treble crochet – forms the primary stitch throughout the crown for height and drape
  • Half treble crochet – used on the brim to create longer sections that extend over the ears
  • Double crochet – employed on the brim alongside half trebles for structured shaping
  • Single crochet – creates the final row in the contrast colour for a finished edge
  • Slip stitch – used to create a decorative 'top stitch' effect and forms three textured stripes around the band

Colour and Design Details

Angeline features a sophisticated tonal colour scheme using three yarn colours that create a gradual tonal change throughout the hat. The Nundle Collection Chaffey yarns used are Natural (#15), Grey (#23), Steel Blue (#90), and Berry (#125). A contrast colour is featured on the final row of the brim and is also used for three rows of slip stitch around the band, creating visual interest and definition.

The slip stitch stripes around the band demonstrate varied construction techniques: the central strip uses yarn held double for added texture and weight, while the two outer stripes use single yarn for a more delicate appearance. This variation in yarn thickness creates dimensional texture and visual contrast.

Decorative Elements

Three crochet buttons serve as the primary embellishment, positioned on the right-hand side of the hat. These buttons are created using two plumbing O-rings and a washer as structural components, then covered with crochet. The buttons are made in two different sizes and colours, adding a unique, handcrafted detail to the finished hat.

Yarn and Materials

Angeline is designed to be worked with fingering yarn held double, which creates a fabric weight suitable for a structured cloche hat. This technique of holding two strands together allows for flexibility in yarn weight while achieving the desired drape and structure. One ball each of the four Nundle Collection Chaffey colours is required to complete the project.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch combinations and shaping techniques. The variety of stitches used and the top-down construction method require confidence in tension control and stitch recognition.
