What is Being Made

Andrea Socks is a pair of unisex toe-up socks designed by independent knitwear designer Myriam Forneris. These socks feature decorative cable and texture elements running along the sides, with an additional textured panel positioned on the centre back for visual interest and subtle movement in the design.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft. The socks are worked in the toe-up construction method, which begins at the toe and progresses toward the cuff. This approach allows for easier fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the socks as you knit. The toe-up technique is particularly useful for achieving a comfortable fit without the need for grafting at the toe.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

The Andrea Socks pattern incorporates several stitch techniques to create its distinctive appearance:

  • Stockinette Stitch forms the foundation of the sock fabric, providing a smooth, classic knit surface
  • Cable stitches run along the sides of the socks, adding textural depth and visual dimension
  • Ribbed panel is featured on the back of the sock, contributing to the overall texture and helping with sock structure
  • Textured panel positioned at the centre back adds additional visual interest beyond the cable work

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Andrea Socks pattern calls for Garnstudio Drops Flora, a premium fingering-weight yarn (4-ply) composed of 65% wool and 35% alpaca. This blend provides warmth, elasticity, and a luxurious feel suitable for everyday sock wear. The yardage requirements vary by size: approximately 45 grams (210 meters) for size S, 50 grams for size M, and 60 grams for size L. The pattern specifies Denim Blue as the colorway for the original design.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires 2.5 mm (US size 1) circular needles measuring 80 cm (32 inches) or longer to accommodate the sock stitches comfortably while working in the round. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to achieve the correct gauge. Additional tools include five stitch markers (two for marking the front textured pattern, two for the back ribbed panel, and one optional marker for the beginning of round), a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is designed to a gauge of 28 stitches and 40 rounds per 10 centimeters (4 inches) in Stockinette Stitch. Three sizes are available: S with 56 stitches, M with 64 stitches, and L with 72 stitches. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit and comfort.

Difficulty Level

Andrea Socks is rated as an intermediate difficulty project. This classification reflects the inclusion of cable and textured stitch patterns beyond basic stockinette, combined with the technical requirements of toe-up sock construction and working in the round on circular needles.
