Anchor Regenbogen Alphabet (ANC0003-83) – Rainbow Embroidery Alphabet Pattern by Pumora

The Anchor Regenbogen Alphabet (Design Nr. ANC0003-83), designed by Pumora and published by Anchor Crafts, is a charming rainbow alphabet embroidery pattern available as a free downloadable PDF. The design allows embroiderers to stitch individual letters of the alphabet in vibrant, blended rainbow colours, each finished and displayed inside a mini embroidery hoop for a decorative effect. Each completed letter measures approximately 4 x 4 cm, though this varies slightly depending on the individual letter. This project is rated beginner level, making it an ideal introduction to hand embroidery for newcomers to the craft.

What Is Being Made

Embroiderers create individual rainbow-coloured alphabet letters, each stitched onto a small piece of yellow cotton fabric and framed within a mini embroidery hoop. The letters are designed to be stitched one at a time on fabric pieces of at least 10 x 10 cm per letter, or larger. Multiple letters can be stitched onto a single piece of fabric, provided at least 1 cm of space is left between each motif, including the circular or oval frame area for the hoop. The finished pieces make beautiful decorative items, personalised gifts, or name displays when multiple letters are combined.

Each letter features a decorative background chosen from four available background designs, which can be placed neatly or arranged in a more random, casual style. This flexibility allows embroiderers to personalise each letter further and create a unique finished piece.

Techniques Used

  • Satin stitch (versetzter Plattstich) – Used for the thicker areas of each letter. The stitches can intentionally vary in length to help the rainbow colours blend and transition softly into one another, creating a smooth gradient effect across the letterform.
  • Single stitches (Einzelstiche) – Used to compose the background decorative motifs. Most of the four background designs are built up entirely from individual straight stitches, giving texture and detail to the surrounding area.
  • Tulip stitch (Tulpenstich) – Referenced as a specific stitch used within the background decoration, distinguishing it from the single-stitch motifs used elsewhere in the background.
  • Pattern transfer – The template is printed out and the chosen letter is transferred onto the fabric before stitching begins, a fundamental preparation technique in hand embroidery.
  • Hoop framing – Once stitching is complete, the motif is cut from the fabric and mounted into a mini embroidery hoop following the hoop manufacturer's instructions, turning the embroidery into a finished decorative display piece.

Stitches Used

  • Versetzter Plattstich (offset or brick satin stitch) – The primary stitch for filling the letter shapes, worked with intentionally uneven stitch lengths to achieve a natural colour blending effect.
  • Einzelstiche (single/straight stitches) – Used throughout the background decoration to build up small motifs and patterns.
  • Tulpenstich (tulip stitch) – A decorative stitch used as part of the background embellishment options.

The pattern calls for Anchor Stranded Cotton 8m skeins (product base number 4635000), worked using 1 strand of the 6-strand thread throughout the entire design. The ten colours specified in the pattern are:
