Anchor Monstera Love Embroidery Pattern (ANC0003-44) by Sew Botanical

The Anchor Monstera Love pattern, design number ANC0003-44, is a charming embroidery design created by Sew Botanical and published by Anchor. Available as a free downloadable PDF, this project invites embroiderers to stitch a stylish monstera plant complete with a decorative pot and frame — a popular botanical motif that suits modern home décor, hoop art displays, and handmade gift-making. The finished design fits within a 5-inch (13 cm) embroidery hoop, making it a compact and satisfying project to complete.

Skill Level and Suitability

This pattern is rated Easy, making it an ideal choice for beginner embroiderers who are just learning foundational hand embroidery techniques. It is also a relaxing and quick project for more experienced stitchers looking for a fun, low-pressure make. Because the design is worked within a small hoop, it requires minimal materials and can be completed in just a few sessions.

What Is Being Made

The finished piece depicts a monstera plant — inspired by the beloved tropical houseplant — nestled in a decorative pot with legs, all framed within a stitched border. The design captures the iconic split-leaf silhouette of the monstera alongside a textured soil effect and a clearly outlined pot and frame. The word "Love" is incorporated into the design title, giving the piece a warm, botanical-art aesthetic that works beautifully as framed hoop art.

Materials Required

  • Anchor Stranded Cotton (8m skeins) in the following colours: #01044, #00001, #00358, #00360, and #00403
  • Calico fabric — medium weight with a close weave, which provides an ideal ground for hand embroidery stitches
  • A 5-inch (13 cm) embroidery hoop to tension the fabric while stitching
  • Long Darning Needles, Sizes 1–5 — darner or standard embroidery needles are both suitable for this project
  • Scissors for trimming thread ends
  • A fabric pen for transferring the printed design onto the calico fabric

Thread and Strand Preparation

Anchor Stranded Cotton is made up of six individual strands twisted together, and this pattern requires fewer than all six strands for each element of the design. Stitchers will need to split their thread lengths before beginning, separating out the specified number of strands for each section. This is a standard embroidery technique that allows for finer detail and more control over the texture and coverage of each stitch.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • French Knots — used to create the soil texture at the base of the plant pot, worked in colour #00358 using 3 strands. The knots are made by wrapping the thread twice around the needle. The pattern encourages a relaxed approach — stitchers simply continue adding French knots until they are happy with the coverage, with no need to count exact quantities. This makes the technique very accessible for beginners.
  • Backstitch (Bst) — used to outline the plant pot and frame, including the pot's legs, worked in colour #00403 using just 1 strand of thread. Backstitch is one of the most fundamental embroidery stitches, creating a clean, continuous line that defines the shape and structure of the design.
