Amigurumi Roose the Monster Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

Roose the Monster is an amigurumi toy designed by Stacey Trock, standing 11 inches tall when completed. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a stuffed monster character perfect for children or collectors of handmade amigurumi toys. The design dates back to June 2011 and has become a popular pattern available through Fresh Stitches.

Crochet Techniques Used

This amigurumi pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for crafters with intermediate experience. The construction involves working in continuous rounds to build three-dimensional forms, a hallmark of amigurumi creation. The pattern utilizes single crochet stitches as the primary building block, combined with strategic increases and decreases to shape the monster's body, head, and appendages. Shaping is achieved through single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) decreases, allowing the crocheter to taper sections and create defined features. The pattern demonstrates flexibility in yarn weight selection, allowing crafters to customize the final size and texture of their finished monster.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch): Foundation stitch for beginning sections
  • Single Crochet (sc): Primary stitch used throughout the pattern for building amigurumi fabric
  • Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog): Decrease stitch used for shaping and tapering sections

Materials and Tools

The pattern requires a Size H crochet hook as the base recommendation, though hook size should be adjusted according to the yarn weight selected. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in yarn ends and assembling the finished pieces.

For embellishment and finishing, the pattern calls for two 12mm black animal eyes to create the monster's expressive face, and a few handfuls of polyester fiberfill stuffing to give Roose dimension and structure.

Yarn Requirements

The sample monster is crocheted in worsted weight yarn using Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton, a 100% organic cotton blend. The color palette includes:

  • Main Color (MC): Blue (Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton, color Azul) – 300 yards
  • Secondary Color (SC): Yellow (Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton, color Lemonade) – 80 yards
  • Accent Color (AC): White (Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton, color Tuli)

The pattern offers significant flexibility in yarn selection. Crafters can substitute any yarn weight by using the hook size recommended on the yarn's ball band and adjusting tension as needed. For a larger, extra-cuddly version of Roose, bulky weight yarn is recommended, though this will require additional yardage beyond the stated amounts. The use of organic cotton provides a soft, breathable finish suitable for toys intended for children.

Pattern Notes

This downloadable PDF pattern from Fresh Stitches is designed for intermediate crocheters who are comfortable with basic amigurumi construction and shaping techniques. The flexibility to work with various yarn weights makes it accessible to crafters with different material preferences and desired finished sizes.
