Product Description
Ambrosia is knit seamlessly from the top down with dart-like waist shaping that is further accentuated with ribbing. Cardigan fronts are trimmed with cables for stability and the neckline is finished with an I-cord for a clean, elegant look. Cable pattern is both written and charted for your convenience.
The cardigan uses hook-and-eye closures along the front edges and is designed to be worn with a close fit to ensure there is enough tension to keep the closures securely fastened. Yarn that was used for this project is Reynolds Saucy and is a classic mercerized cotton in Worsted weight with slight sheen and a great stitch definition.

Ambrosia Cardigan by Katya Frankel
What is Being Made
Ambrosia is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Katya Frankel. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a fitted cardigan with a close-fitting silhouette, available in five sizes ranging from 32 to 48 inches in chest circumference. The cardigan features hook-and-eye closures along the front edges and is constructed using seamless top-down knitting methodology.
Construction Technique
The Ambrosia cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down, a technique that allows for easy fit adjustments and minimal finishing work. This construction method begins at the neckline and progresses downward to the hem, eliminating the need for seaming body pieces together. The pattern incorporates dart-like waist shaping to create a tailored, contoured fit that follows the natural curves of the body. The top-down approach combined with strategic shaping ensures a garment that drapes elegantly while maintaining structure.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The Ambrosia design showcases intricate cables as a primary design element, with a dedicated front cable panel that measures 12 stitches across and requires careful tension management. The pattern incorporates simple increases and decreases appropriate for intermediate knitters, making the shaping accessible without requiring advanced techniques. An I-cord trim finishes the neckline, adding a polished, professional edge to the garment. The main fabric is worked in Stocking stitch, a fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic appearance and serves as the perfect canvas for showcasing the cable details.
Yarn and Materials
The Ambrosia pattern calls for Reynolds Saucy yarn, a 100% mercerized cotton fiber that provides breathability and a refined drape ideal for a fitted cardigan. The pattern requires 5 to 7 balls depending on size (approximately 800 to 1200 yards total), with the sample shown in colorway #405 straw. Knitters may substitute any yarn with similar yardage and weight specifications.
The pattern requires size 4mm (US6) circular needles for the main body and a size 4mm (US6) set of double-pointed needles for smaller circumference sections such as the neckline and I-cord trim. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, stitch holders or waste yarn for managing live stitches, and a darning needle for weaving in ends and finishing.
Gauge and Finishing
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this fitted design. The pattern specifies 20 stitches and 27 rounds equal 4 inches (10 cm) in Stocking stitch, while the front cable panel requires 12 stitches to measure 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm). Knitters should adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge before beginning. The cardigan is finished with hook-and-eye closures along the front edges, providing a secure and elegant closure method that complements the tailored aesthetic of the design.
Skill Level
Classified as intermediate difficulty, the Ambrosia pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable work and fitted shaping. The pattern features simple increases and decreases combined with straightforward cable techniques and basic finishing methods, making it an excellent project for advancing knitters seeking to refine their construction and shaping skills.
