Amalia Top Knitting Pattern in Adriafil Slogan – Free Downloadable PDF

The Amalia Top is a stylish, lightweight knitted top designed for warm weather or layering, worked in the delicate Adriafil Slogan 4-ply yarn. This free downloadable PDF pattern produces a flattering, semi-fitted silhouette with elegant dropped-stitch detailing, ribbed hem and neckline finishes, and a neatly shaped armhole with a distinctive Stockinette trim. The pattern covers two size ranges — 36/40 and 42/46 — making it accessible to a wide range of knitters.

What Is Being Made

The Amalia Top is a pullover-style knitted top constructed in two identical pieces — a front and a back — that are seamed at the shoulders and sides. The design features a shaped armhole, a round neckline with held stitches for a smooth finish, and a ribbed hem at the bottom. The armhole edges are finished with a band of Stockinette stitch rather than a traditional ribbed trim, giving the garment a clean, modern look. The finished top measures approximately 68 cm in length before the neckline ribbing is applied.

Techniques Used

  • Casting on and binding off — including binding off in pattern (1x1 Ribbing) for a neat, stretchy neckline edge
  • Shaping via stepped bind-offs — armhole shaping is achieved by binding off at both edges every 2 rows in a sequence of 1x4, 1x3, 1x2, and 3x1 stitches, creating a smooth curved edge
  • Holding stitches — center 33 stitches are placed on hold for the neckline, and neck shaping is worked by leaving 3x4 stitches on hold every 2 rows on each side
  • Working each half separately — after the neckline divide, both left and right shoulders are finished independently for precise shaping
  • Picking up stitches — 150 stitches are picked up along the armhole edges (excluding the bound-off sections) to work the armhole trim
  • Dropped yarn-over technique — the signature Pattern stitch involves intentional yarn-overs that are later dropped to create an open, lace-like texture; this dropping occurs at key transition points such as armhole shaping and the first row of neckline ribbing
  • Seaming — shoulder seams are sewn first, followed by side seams after the armhole trim is worked

Stitches Used

  • 1x1 Ribbing — used for the 6 cm hem at the cast-on edge and for the 5-row neckline finish; also used as the bind-off method at the neckline for a flexible, tidy edge
  • Pattern Stitch (with dropped yarn-overs) — the main body stitch, worked after the ribbed hem; this stitch creates a textured, open fabric. The gauge for this stitch is 22 stitches and 36 rows = 10x10 cm after dropping yarn-overs, which is an important detail as the fabric relaxes and opens up once the yarn-overs are dropped
  • Stockinette Stitch — used for the 9-row armhole trim, picked up and worked after the body pieces are seamed at the shoulders

Construction Notes

Both the back and front begin with a cast-on of 116–126 stitches (depending on size), worked in 1x1 Ribbing for 6 cm. In the final wrong-side row of the ribbing, stitches are evenly increased to reach 123–129 stitches before transitioning into the main Pattern stitch. This increase sets up the yarn-over structure of the pattern. At the armhole point (40 cm from cast-on), the increased stitches are dropped and loops are picked up as part of the shaping process, a technique that is repeated again at the neckline ribbing transition. This careful management of the dropped yarn-overs is central to achieving the correct stitch count and fabric drape throughout the garment.
