Product Description
The Alocasia Pullover was inspired by one of my favorite houseplants Alocasia Polly. The plant boasts large dark green arrowhead shaped leaves with highly defined spines and veins in a lighter green. The yoke of the sweater features the unique leaf shape radiating out from the collar. Knit from the top down in the round this sweater requires no seaming and is a fun balance of two color stranded knitting and simple stockinette stitch. Knit up in Brooklyn Tweed’s Loft yarn the sweater has a rustic, woolly feel and slightly tweedy appearance. The Alocasia Pullover is the perfect sweater to bring a little houseplant joy to your wardrobe in the cooler months!

Design Inspiration and Overview
The Alocasia Pullover is a knitted sweater inspired by the Alocasia Polly houseplant, featuring its distinctive arrowhead-shaped leaves with defined spines and veins. The design translates this botanical inspiration into a striking yoke pattern that radiates outward from the collar, creating a visually dynamic pullover perfect for cooler weather. This downloadable PDF pattern combines decorative colorwork with functional simplicity, offering knitters an intermediate-level project that celebrates nature-inspired design.
Construction Method and Techniques
The Alocasia Pullover is knit from the top down in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless garment. This construction method allows for easy customization and fitting adjustments as you work. The sweater balances two-color stranded knitting in the yoke section with simple stockinette stitch throughout the body and sleeves, making it an engaging project that develops colorwork skills without overwhelming complexity.
Stitch Work and Pattern Details
- Yoke Pattern: Two-color stranded knitting featuring the signature leaf motif that radiates from the neckline
- Body and Sleeves: Stockinette stitch for smooth, classic texture
- Cuffs and Ribbing: Knit ribbing for fitted edges and structure
Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed using 4-ply yarn weight, specifically Brooklyn Tweed's Loft yarn, which provides a rustic, woolly feel with a slightly tweedy appearance. The yarn choice contributes to the sweater's organic, natural aesthetic that complements the botanical design.
Knitting needles required include US size needles for the main body (exact size varies by gauge), with 9-inch (23 cm) circular needles, 2-circulars, DPNs, or Magic Loop method recommended for working the sleeves and cuffs. Pattern instructions suggest sizing up 1 or 2 needle sizes in the colorwork section to maintain even tension throughout the stranded knitting.
Sizing and Finished Dimensions
The Alocasia Pullover is available in 10 sizes ranging from Size 1 through Size 10, with finished bust circumferences of 36 inches (91.5 cm) through 72 inches (182.9 cm), accommodating a wide range of body measurements and fit preferences.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Alocasia Pullover is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, basic colorwork, and garment construction. The combination of stranded knitting and top-down construction provides an excellent opportunity to develop or refine these techniques in a wearable, finished garment.
