Product Description
Once I knit mini-pompom for Alma, I decided it would be fun to knit another wee shawl! This little shawl uses a simple crescent shape, adds wispy novelty yarn stripes and a fun picot edging for a playful result!
Once again, I knit a second version of the yarn, this time using a different, more neutral tone of Lichen and Lace Merino Fingering and off white novelty yarn to create a slightly larger version with a more adult look!
Alma's mini-lines Shawl by VERSACIKNITS
What is Being Made
Alma's mini-lines is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl designed with a triangular silhouette. The finished shawl measures approximately 44 inches (112 centimeters) in wingspan with a center depth of 9 inches (23 centimeters), making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a lightweight wrap.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This shawl employs a straightforward construction method appropriate for knitters new to shawl design. The piece is worked using garter stitch as the primary fabric, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a reversible, textured surface through alternating knit rows. The design incorporates a picot edge detail, which adds a decorative finished edge to the shawl. The pattern utilizes a 32-inch (80-centimeter) circular needle, allowing for the management of a large number of stitches as the shawl expands from its center point outward.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the shawl, created by knitting every row. This produces a reversible fabric with horizontal ridges and is ideal for beginners due to its simplicity and forgiving nature.
- Picot Edge: A decorative edging technique that creates small loops along the perimeter, adding visual interest and a refined finish to the completed shawl.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 48 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in garter stitch after blocking. While exact gauge is noted as not critical to the success of this project, variations will alter the yardage requirements and final measurements, making this an excellent beginner project where minor gauge differences remain manageable.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Alma's mini-lines is designed to showcase multiple yarn types and weights, demonstrating versatility in fiber selection. The pattern calls for US size 5 (3.75mm) needles in a 32-inch circular configuration.
Yarn specifications include:
- Color A (Main Body): Approximately 400 yards (365 meters) of fingering or light sport weight yarn. The pattern sample uses Lichen and Lace Merino Fingering in the colorway I see Seashells, which is 100% Superwash Merino Wool available in 400-yard (365-meter) skeins per 100 grams.
- Color B (Picot Edge): Approximately 10 yards (9 meters) of fingering weight yarn in a contrasting color. The sample features Lichen and Lace Merino Fingering in Teal Tide.
- Color C (Decorative Lines): Approximately 20 yards (18 meters) of novelty yarn for creating linear details throughout the shawl. The pattern offers flexibility with yarn choice, suggesting either Mondo Fil Papiyon (69% Nylon, 31% Polyester; 514 yards/470 meters per cone) or Hedgehog Fibers Feather (100% polyamide; 680 yards/620 meters per 100-gram skein) in the colorway Pollen.
Difficulty Level
Classified as a beginner project, Alma's mini-lines requires only fundamental knitting knowledge. The straightforward garter stitch construction and forgiving nature of the pattern make it accessible to knitters developing their foundational skills while introducing them to shawl construction and the creative possibilities of combining multiple yarn types within a single design.
