Product Description
The Alight Top was inspired by my young daughter’s love of birds and bright colors. Simple cables, reminiscent of birds in flight, are sprinkled across the garment to create a lovely, textured fabric. These cables pair beautifully with even the most variegated or speckled yarns! The body is knit in the round from the hem upwards. The front and back are divided and worked flat with extra stitches for grown-on sleeves. A classic wide boatneck makes this top easy to slip over a child’s head, but please swatch (and block!) the Texture pattern to ensure the neckline has the correct finished width.

What is Being Made
The Alight Top is a knitted children's garment designed for babies and children in sizes ranging from 12 months through size 10. The finished chest circumferences range from 21 inches (53.25 cm) for the smallest size up to 28 inches (71 cm) for the largest size. This is a close-fitting top intended to be worn next to the skin or with a thin layer underneath, with recommended positive ease of 0–2 inches to achieve the intended fit.
Design Inspiration and Features
The Alight Top draws inspiration from a child's love of birds and bright colors. The garment showcases simple cable motifs that evoke the visual impression of birds in flight, scattered across the fabric to create textured interest. The cable pattern is specifically designed to pair beautifully with variegated or speckled yarns, allowing the stitch definition to shine while complementing the yarn's color variations.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project features cable stitches as the primary decorative element. The cables are worked throughout the garment in a distributed pattern rather than concentrated in vertical panels, creating an all-over textured design. The construction utilizes circular needles for seamless or nearly seamless construction, which is typical for fitted children's garments.
Yarn and Materials
The Alight Top is worked in fingering-weight yarn, which is a fine yarn weight suitable for creating delicate, fitted garments. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 425 yards (390 meters) for the 12-month size to 935 yards (855 meters) for the size 10. The sample garment was knitted in Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn in the colorway "Piggy Bank," which is composed of 90% merino wool and 10% nylon, providing durability and elasticity suitable for children's wear. The yarn is specified at 437 yards per approximately 100 grams (3.5 ounces).
Needles and Gauge
The pattern calls for US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles. Needle length varies by size: smaller sizes (12 months, 2T, and 4) require 16-inch (40 cm) circulars, while larger sizes (6, 8, and 10) require 24-inch (60 cm) circulars to accommodate the increased circumference.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Alight Top is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with cables and managing stitches on circular needles. The distributed cable pattern and fitted construction require attention to stitch accuracy and shaping.
