Alaska in Gründl – Free Knitting Pattern for a Super Chunky Hat and Scarf Set

This free downloadable PDF pattern from Gründl provides instructions for a coordinating hat and scarf set knitted in the brand's own Alaska uni super chunky yarn. The set is rated as suitable for beginners and works up quickly thanks to the large needle size and thick yarn weight, making it an ideal first project for those new to knitting or anyone looking for a satisfying, fast make.

About the Alaska uni Yarn

Alaska uni by Gründl is a super chunky yarn with a composition of 80% polyacryl and 20% wool. Each 100 g ball yields approximately 75 metres, meaning the yarn knits up at a generous gauge that produces a thick, cosy fabric. The blend offers the warmth and softness of wool combined with the durability and easy-care properties of polyacryl, making the finished accessories practical for everyday winter wear. The pattern uses two colourways: Fb. 09 (mittelgrau / medium grey) as the primary colour and Fb. 13 (ecru) as the contrast colour.

The Bobble Hat

The hat is sized to fit a head circumference of approximately 54 cm to 57 cm, making it suitable for most adults. The design features a classic shaped crown that is worked with structured decrease rounds to create a neat, rounded top. The decreases are worked by knitting groups of stitches together — specifically sets of three stitches at regular intervals — until only a small number of stitches remain. The working yarn is then drawn twice through these remaining stitches and pulled tight to close the crown securely.

A key decorative feature of the hat is a handmade pompom approximately 9 cm in diameter, which is sewn onto the finished crown. The back seam of the hat is closed flat, giving a tidy finish on the inside. The two-colour design uses ecru as an accent against the dominant medium grey, creating a classic winter aesthetic.

  • Finished size: Fits head circumference approximately 54–57 cm
  • Yarn required: Approximately 70 g of Fb. 09 (mittelgrau) and approximately 60 g of Fb. 13 (ecru)
  • Feature: Large handmade pompom, approximately 9 cm diameter
  • Finishing: Flat back seam, pompom attached by sewing

Techniques Used in the Hat

The hat construction involves casting on stitches, working in the round or flat depending on the construction method, and executing decrease rounds to shape the crown. The decreases involve knitting multiple stitches together (zusammenstricken), a fundamental knitting technique that reduces stitch count in a controlled, patterned way. Making the pompom is a simple craft technique requiring only yarn and scissors, or a pompom maker tool.

The Scarf

The scarf is a generously sized accessory measuring approximately 200 cm long by 26 cm wide, making it a substantial wrap-around style scarf perfect for cold weather. It is cast on with 24 stitches plus 2 edge stitches in mittelgrau and worked in a large seed stitch pattern (großes Perlmuster) throughout its entire length. The pattern specifies beginning with a return row before establishing the stitch pattern, which helps create an even, balanced edge.

The scarf is worked in a colour sequence alternating between the two shades — predominantly Fb. 09 (mittelgrau) with accents of Fb. 13 (ecru) — which adds visual interest and texture to the finished piece. After reaching the full length of approximately 200 cm (244 rows), the stitches are cast off while continuing the seed stitch pattern to maintain the textured edge all the way to the end.

  • Finished size: Approximately 200 cm × 26 cm
  • Cast on: 24 stitches plus 2 edge stitches
  • Total rows: Approximately 244 rows
  • Yarn required
